Tomasi and Patrick Gleason wrote Green Lantern Corps as a workplace book: the Corps as an interstellar police force with shifts, politics and casualties. Tomasi and Gleason are the reason the Corps works as an ensemble rather than as Hal Jordan's supporting cast: Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner get genuine arcs, and the alien Lanterns are written as people with jobs. It runs alongside the Johns material and covers the parts his book had no room for. The second Green Lantern Corps omnibus covers Blackest Night and its aftermath from the Corps' point of view, away from Earth and from Hal Jordan. The Corps takes the worst of Blackest Night, their own dead rise, and they are the ones who buried them, and this volume carries the emotional weight the main event could not. Kyle Rayner's arc in particular is the best material the character has ever had, and it is largely absent from the Green Lantern omnibus editions.

Batman: Urban Legends was an anthology series giving Gotham's supporting cast the space the monthly titles never had. The Red Hood serial is the reason this got attention: Zdarsky spends six chapters on Jason Todd finally processing his own death, and it is better than most of what the main titles were doing that year. The anthology format also means each story is complete, which makes it an easy book to dip into.

Batman: Knightfall Omnibus Vol. 2 collects Knightquest, the middle movement of the saga where Jean-Paul Valley takes over as Batman. Gotham gets a more violent Dark Knight, while Scarecrow, the Joker, Gunhawk and others test what happens when the symbol is worn without Bruce Wayne's restraint. Batman: Knightfall Omnibus Vol. 3 closes the saga with KnightsEnd, as Bruce Wayne retrains with Lady Shiva and moves to reclaim the Batman mantle. The Sandman ran for seventy-five issues between 1989 and 1996 and is the book that proved comics could be sold to people who did not read comics. This half contains Brief Lives, Worlds' End and The Kindly Ones, which is where the whole series turns out to have been a tragedy with a fixed ending all along. The Wake closes it. Gaiman planned the finish from early on and refused to continue past it, which is why the series holds together as a novel rather than a run. Overture is the prequel Gaiman wrote twenty years later with J.H. The Death stories are also the most accessible entry point to the whole mythology.

Gail Simone's Birds of Prey is the run that made Oracle, Black Canary and Huntress one of DC's most durable teams, built on competence rather than superpowers. Simone writes Barbara Gordon as the most dangerous person in any room she is in, which is the correct read and one very few writers managed. The Lady Shiva arc is the run's peak, a fight Black Canary cannot win and has to survive anyway, and the humour never undercuts the threat. The second Birds of Prey omnibus continues Gail Simone's run, with the team taking on covert work and the personal costs that come with it. The Spy Smasher arc is where Oracle nearly loses control of the team to a government handler, and it is the run's clearest statement of what Barbara Gordon is: someone whose real power is information and who will not surrender it. Simone also gives Huntress the best character work of her career here.

Jesse Custer is a small town preacher who loses his congregation, his church and most of his town in one night, and comes out of it with the voice of God and a reason to go looking for the real one. Ennis and Dillon open Preacher with the Saint of Killers on his trail and never slow down. Jesse Custer keeps walking across America looking for a God who abandoned his own creation, and the further he gets the less the joke protects anybody. The second omnibus is where Ennis and Dillon stop playing and the friendships, the Saint of Killers and the Grail all come due at once.

Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV wrote Justice League as cosmology: the Source Wall breaks and the forces that built the universe start taking sides. The Batman Who Laughs is included here for good reason, it is the best thing to come out of the era and it reads as the run's real antagonist. The second Snyder and Tynion omnibus takes the Justice League run to its conclusion, through the Year of the Villain and the rise of the Batman Who Laughs. The Batman Who Laughs stops being a crossover villain here and becomes the character DC built a whole line around: a Bruce Wayne infected by the Joker who is smarter than either. Hell Arisen is where he wins, briefly and completely, and it leads directly into Dark Nights: Death Metal.

Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea Omnibus Vol. 1 collects one of DC's great hidden-gem runs. Tommy Monaghan is a Gulf War veteran turned contract killer in the Cauldron, a rough Irish corner of Gotham; a alien bite leaves him with X-ray vision and telepathy, and he sets himself up as the hitman who specializes in killing super-people. Ennis and McCrea, years before their creator-owned fame, blend savage dark comedy with genuine pathos and one of comics' great supporting casts, the regulars of Noonan's bar. Brutal, funny and unexpectedly moving. Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of the run, where the jokes stop being free. Tommy Monaghan is a contract killer in Gotham with minor psychic powers and a bar full of friends, and Ennis spends this volume methodically taking them away. It contains 'Of Thee I Sing', widely considered one of the finest Superman stories ever written.

John Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 in 1985 and got his own title two years later, becoming the character DC has adapted into film, television and animation more than any other Vertigo creation. The early run establishes the format everything since has used: Constantine's magic is mostly lying, his friends die because they know him, and the horror is usually political. Jamie Delano wrote Thatcher's Britain as a haunting, which gives these issues a specificity that later runs traded for mythology. John Constantine, Hellblazer by Jamie Delano Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of the run that invented Hellblazer as a genre of its own: political horror set in Thatcher's Britain, where the monsters are usually institutions and John's real weapon is being willing to sacrifice his friends. Delano's Constantine is nastier, funnier and sadder than any version that followed.

Suicide Squad by John Ostrander Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the run that invented everything the concept is known for: Amanda Waller, the bomb in the neck, and the certainty that some of the team will not come back. Ostrander writes it as a Cold War espionage book that happens to use supervillains, and it remains far sharper than any adaptation of it. Amanda Waller keeps sending convicts on missions the government will deny, and in the second omnibus the bill starts arriving: congressional hearings, defections, and a body count among characters readers had come to like. Ostrander wrote the political thriller everyone else has been copying since.

The Flash by Joshua Williamson Omnibus Vol. 1 launches Barry Allen into a modern DC run built on momentum, mystery and emotional strain. Carmine Di Giandomenico, Davide Gianfelice and Howard Porter give the speed a sharp visual pulse while Williamson rebuilds the hero's world around legacy and consequence. The Flash by Joshua Williamson Omnibus Vol. 2 focuses on Joshua Williamson's modern Flash run, with Barry Allen shaped by Speed Force pressure, personal damage, enemy strategy and the burden of always moving forward. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm. Joshua Williamson wrote The Flash for six years, the longest run since Mark Waid, and this volume covers its conclusion. Issue #750 is the anniversary special that brings back every Flash at once, and the finale pays off the Forces cosmology Williamson spent years building, Speed, Strength, Sage and Still. Gail Simone balances brutal action, dark comedy and real emotional stakes, and the run is famous for turning Catman from a punchline into a genuine badass. Six villains who cannot work with anybody else keep taking jobs together, and Gail Simone spends the second half of the run making you care about every one of them before the bill arrives. The finale is one of the bleakest endings DC has published and it is fully earned.

Dashiell Bad Horse comes back to the Prairie Rose reservation after fifteen years away, working undercover for the FBI against the tribal boss who runs the new casino. Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera wrote the best crime comic of its decade by refusing to let anyone in it be simply guilty or simply innocent. Bad Horse finally knows who killed his mother, and knowing it does not save anybody. The second omnibus takes Scalped through its last thirty issues, where every character has to pay for the choices made in the first half and Aaron refuses to hand out a single clean ending.

Lucifer Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the first half of Mike Carey's Sandman spin-off, in which the retired Devil is offered a favour by Heaven and uses it to create a universe of his own, purely to prove he is not part of anyone else's plan. Free will treated as a war, with Peter Gross on art. Lucifer Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of Mike Carey's run, in which the created universe starts to fail, the war with Heaven becomes unavoidable, and Lucifer has to decide whether independence is worth what it costs everyone around him. It ends on one of the most satisfying final issues Vertigo ever published.

The Spectre by Ostrander & Mandrake, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake took on The Spectre in 1992, after acclaimed runs on Suicide Squad and Batman, and made it DC's most serious book about judgement. Ostrander writes theology rather than superheroics: the Spectre has unlimited power and no idea how to use it well, and the run is largely about the difference between vengeance and justice. Mandrake's art is genuinely frightening, and the book is far stranger than anything DC was publishing under its main line. The second Spectre omnibus completes Ostrander and Mandrake's run, one of the longest and least compromising books DC published in the nineties. The back half is where Ostrander stops asking whether the Spectre is right and starts asking whether Jim Corrigan deserves to exist at all. The original series proposal is a genuinely interesting document, it shows how much of the run was planned from the start.

Green Lantern by Robert Venditti, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Robert Venditti's first Green Lantern omnibus picks up after the Third Army, with Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner rebuilding a Corps that has just been decimated. Following Geoff Johns is a hard brief, and Venditti's answer is to break the thing Johns built: the spectrum destabilises, the rings stop being reliable, and Hal has to lead without the certainty the franchise was founded on. It is a more interesting response than continuing the formula. Green Lantern by Robert Venditti Omnibus Vol. 2 follows the Corps under cosmic leadership pressure, shaped by war-scale decisions, spectrum politics and the cost of carrying a ring when every choice echoes outward. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Shade the Changing Man by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Shade arrives from Meta wearing a dead man's body to fight the madness spreading through America, and the woman travelling with him is the daughter of the family his host murdered. Milligan and Bachalo turned a Ditko creation into the strangest road trip Vertigo ever published. The second omnibus follows Shade past the point where the madness stops being outside him. Milligan keeps changing the format, the body and the narrator, and the run finishes as one of the few Vertigo series that got to end exactly how its writer wanted.

The Books of Magic, collected as a pack of 3 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. The Books of Magic Omnibus Vol. 1 collects Neil Gaiman's original miniseries and the long-running series that followed it, in which a bespectacled London boy called Tim Hunter is told he could become the greatest magician of his age. John Ney Rieber and Peter Gross turned that premise into one of Vertigo's most sustained coming-of-age stories. The Books of Magic Omnibus Vol. 2 continues Tim Hunter's story as the consequences of his choice catch up with him. John Ney Rieber and Peter Gross push the series further from fantasy adventure and closer to a study of a teenager carrying more power than judgement. Books of Magic Omnibus Vol. 3 closes out Tim Hunter's Vertigo run, including the later Hunter: The Age of Magic material. It is the end of one of the imprint's longest continuous stories about growing up with power you did not ask for.

Batman & Superman in World's Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the team-up series at its most inventive, when Superman and Batman shared a book every month and the plots involved body swaps, alien impostors and whatever else the writers could think of. Drawn largely by Curt Swan. Batman & Superman in World's Finest: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 2 continues the team-up run deeper into the sixties, with the plots getting steadily more outlandish and the Superman-Batman partnership settling into the shape it still has today.

Green Lantern: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 focuses on Hal Jordan's Silver Age mythology, with Green Lantern shaped by the ring, the oath, the Corps, alien threats and sharp heroic design. Hal Jordan first wore a Green Lantern ring in 1959, in a reinvention that turned a 1940s crime-fighter with a magic lantern into science fiction with an interstellar police force behind it. The stories are constructed as puzzles rather than fights, Superman usually wins by working something out, which is a very different character from the one who preceded and followed. Superman: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 2 keeps the Man of Steel in full Silver Age invention mode: impossible transformations, strange science, secret identities, bright covers and the kind of story logic that treats imagination as a superpower. Curt Swan and Wayne Boring give the period its clean, iconic visual grammar.

Legion of Super-Heroes: Five Years Later, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. The Legion always assumed the 30th century was a utopia. Five Years Later opens with the utopia gone, the team disbanded and the survivors older, poorer and compromised. Giffen and the Bierbaums rebuilt the series as dense political science fiction and split the fanbase permanently. The second half of the Five Years Later run takes the Legion through the Terra Mosaic and into the reboot that ended it. The Bierbaums keep writing after Giffen leaves, Stuart Immonen arrives as an artist nobody had heard of, and the series finishes by rewriting its own continuity out of existence.

House of Mystery: The Bronze Age Omnibus Vol. 2 collects more of DC's great horror anthology, hosted by Cain and drawn by a roster that reads like a list of the best artists of the era. Short, sharp stories with twist endings, from the period when DC horror was at its peak. The third Bronze Age volume of DC's horror anthology, where Cain introduces short stories that run from genuinely nasty to openly comic. This is the era when the Comics Code loosened and the artists on these books, Wrightson, Aparo, Toth and Kaluta, were allowed to draw what they wanted.

Who's Who was published monthly in the 1980s as a loose leaf encyclopedia and it is still the best single record of what the DC universe contained before Crisis rearranged it. The second half of DC's illustrated directory, running through the rest of the alphabet and into the post Crisis updates. Same format, same idea: one character per page, drawn by whoever owned them, from the biggest names in the line to characters nobody has used since.

Tom King's Batman ran for eighty-five issues and is the defining modern take on the character: a run about trauma, love and whether Bruce Wayne is allowed to be happy. I Am Suicide alone reframes how Batman talks about his own death drive. Volume 1 is the entry point, and the omnibus format is the only one that keeps the crossover chapters in place. The second half of Tom King's eighty-five issue Batman run, where the wedding arc collapses and the consequences take over the book. Volume 1 sets up the proposal; this is where King collects on it. Zdarsky writes Batman as a man whose intelligence is the threat, which is a genuinely different angle after King's emotional register. Chuck Dixon coordinates a dozen titles into a single collapse, and the omnibus finally puts the whole crossover in reading order instead of scattered across four series. No Man's Land is the year DC declared Gotham dead.
