Nightwing: Rebirth is Tim Seeley's run, which returned Dick Grayson to the costume after years as a spy and moved him to Blüdhaven to build a life outside Gotham. Seeley writes Dick as the one member of the Bat-family who is genuinely well-adjusted, which is a harder character to make interesting and he manages it. The Blüdhaven material gives him a city, a supporting cast and problems that are his own rather than Batman's leftovers, and it is the run every later Nightwing writer builds on.

Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale worked on Batman across seven years and four projects, building a single continuous account of Gotham's transition from mob city to costumed city. This omnibus puts all of it together. Read in sequence these are not four books but one: Harvey Dent's fall, the aftermath that creates a new Robin, and Selina Kyle's search for a father, all told in the same seasonal structure. It is also the single most direct comics source for Nolan's trilogy, which the Nolan and Goyer conversation makes explicit.

Batman debuted in Detective Comics #27 in 1939 as a pulp vigilante with a gun, and within two years had acquired a sidekick, a code against killing and most of the rogues' gallery still in use today. Everything the character is built on was invented in about eighteen months, and this is that stretch. The Joker and Catwoman both appear in Batman #1, which is one of the strongest single issues in comics history by sheer consequence. The stories are short and strange, and read closer to pulp fiction than to modern superhero comics.

Beyond was the year Marvel took Spider-Man away from Peter Parker and handed the role to Ben Reilly, sponsored by a corporation with its own plans for the brand. The premise is corporate rather than heroic: Ben Reilly gets sponsorship, training and a target on his back, while whatever happened to Peter is kept off the page for months. Morbius, Kraven, the Queen Goblin and a returning Doctor Octopus keep the pressure on, and the collision between the two Spider-Men is what the whole year was built toward.

John Constantine first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 in 1985 and got his own title two years later, becoming the character DC has adapted into film, television and animation more than any other Vertigo creation. The early run establishes the format everything since has used: Constantine's magic is mostly lying, his friends die because they know him, and the horror is usually political. Jamie Delano wrote Thatcher's Britain as a haunting, which gives these issues a specificity that later runs traded for mythology.

The Batman Adventures was the comic spun off from Batman: The Animated Series, written for the same audience and, as it turned out, for everyone else too. Mad Love alone justifies the volume: Paul Dini and Bruce Timm's Harley Quinn origin, which won an Eisner and became the version DC has used ever since. The rest is the animated house style at its best, clean, self-contained stories that work for a child and hold up for an adult, which is rarer than it sounds.

Batman: Knightfall Omnibus Vol. 1 begins the Bane saga by turning Gotham into a gauntlet. Arkham's inmates are loose, Batman is forced through fight after fight, and Bane waits for exhaustion to do what brute strength alone cannot: make the Dark Knight break.

Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo's Nightwing won an Eisner and is the most acclaimed run the character has ever had, built on Dick Grayson inheriting a fortune and deciding to give it away. Redondo's art is the reason this run is famous: issue #87's single-shot chase drawn as one continuous panel, and layouts that keep finding new ways to show movement. Taylor writes Dick as relentlessly decent, which in a Bat-book is a genuinely radical choice. It reads perfectly well without the first volume.

Mark Waid wrote The Flash for eight years and is the writer who decided Wally West should stop being Barry Allen's replacement and start being better than him. The Return of Barry Allen is here, and it is the best Flash story ever published: Barry comes back, he is wrong, and working out why is the point. Waid also invents the Speed Force in this stretch, which reorganised the entire franchise and is now the basis of the television series.

No Man's Land is the year DC declared Gotham dead. After the earthquake of Cataclysm, the United States government evacuates the city, dynamites the bridges and leaves whoever stays behind to divide the ruins into territories. The premise strips Batman of everything except the city itself: no infrastructure, no law, and gang leaders marking blocks with spray paint. It is also where Cassandra Cain becomes Batgirl. Volume 1 is the opening third of the crossover, in reading order across every Bat-title, which is the only way it works.

Garth Ennis wrote Hellblazer for three years in the early nineties and produced the run most people mean when they talk about John Constantine. Dangerous Habits is the story where Constantine cons three lords of Hell into saving his life because none of them will let the others have his soul, and it is the single best trick the character has ever pulled. Ennis also writes his friendships better than anyone: the pub scenes are the reason the horror lands.

Flashpoint is the DC event where one impossible choice turns the whole world wrong. Barry Allen wakes in a reality without the Justice League as he knows it, with Thomas Wayne as Batman, Atlantis and Themyscira at war, and every familiar piece of the DC universe bent into a darker shape. This anniversary omnibus is the full earthquake: the central event, the altered world around it and the road toward the New 52.

Batman by Paul Dini Omnibus is Batman as detective first and superhero second. Dini brings compact Gotham mysteries where the case matters as much as the costume, and where villains such as Hush, Riddler and Harley Quinn stay personal rather than decorative.

Chip Zdarsky took over Batman in 2022 with Jorge Jiménez, and opened by attacking the one thing the character depends on: his own preparation. Failsafe is the premise at its sharpest: a contingency Batman built against himself, working exactly as designed. The Gotham War then turns Bruce and Selina into opponents over whether Gotham's criminals can be rehabilitated. Zdarsky writes Batman as a man whose intelligence is the threat, which is a genuinely different angle after King's emotional register.

Justice League relaunched in 2011 as the flagship of DC's New 52, with Geoff Johns and Jim Lee starting the entire universe from scratch. The first arc is the League's origin retold for a generation that had only seen the films, and the Darkseid invasion gives them a reason to stay together. Johns then spends years on the Trinity War and the Crime Syndicate, and this volume is the run in full rather than the opening six issues everyone owns.

The second Ultimate X-Men omnibus covers the post-Millar years, with Brian Michael Bendis, Brian K. Vaughan and Robert Kirkman each taking the book in turn. Vaughan's run is the strongest stretch of the series: the Hellfire Club, Ultimate Longshot and the arc where Xavier's methods stop looking defensible. Because the Ultimate universe has no reset button, decisions made here stay made — which gives the middle of the run more weight than most relaunched titles ever manage.

The Death and Return of Superman is not just the day Superman falls; it is the whole shockwave after the fall. Doomsday turns the fight into a public wound, Metropolis has to imagine a world without Clark Kent, and four new figures step into the empty space where Superman used to stand. This omnibus keeps the event, grief and rebirth together as one huge DC turning point.

War Games was DC's answer to a simple question: what happens if every gang in Gotham loses its leader on the same night. The answer is a citywide gang war that Batman started by accident. This is the crossover that kills Stephanie Brown, ends Batman's working relationship with the Gotham police and leaves the Bat-family fractured for years. It is also one of the tightest crossovers DC has published: every chapter advances the same night, and the omnibus is the only edition that keeps them in sequence.

Road to No Man's Land is the run-up to DC's biggest Batman event of the nineties. A cataclysmic earthquake levels Gotham, and these are the months in which the city falls apart before Washington writes it off entirely. This is the volume most readers skip and then need: No Man's Land makes far more sense when you have watched Bane escape, Azrael struggle for legitimacy and Gotham's infrastructure fail one system at a time. Chuck Dixon coordinates a dozen titles into a single collapse, and the omnibus finally puts the whole crossover in reading order instead of scattered across four series.

Batman Eternal was DC's attempt at a weekly Batman series: fifty-two issues published in a year, plotted by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV with a rotating writing team. The premise is a slow-motion demolition of Gotham's institutions: Jim Gordon imprisoned for a crash he did not cause, Falcone back in the city, and Batman losing the police force, Arkham and eventually Wayne Enterprises. A weekly schedule forces a plot that never idles, and at fifty-two issues in one volume it reads closer to a season of television than to a comic run.

John Constantine, Hellblazer by Jamie Delano Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of the run that invented Hellblazer as a genre of its own: political horror set in Thatcher's Britain, where the monsters are usually institutions and John's real weapon is being willing to sacrifice his friends. Delano's Constantine is nastier, funnier and sadder than any version that followed.

Hush was the 2002 storyline that put Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee on Batman together, and it remains one of the best-selling Batman books ever published. The structure is a tour of the rogues' gallery with a hidden hand behind it, and Jim Lee draws every one of them at full scale, which is why the book sells to people who own nothing else. Collecting the Gotham Knights and Detective follow-ups is what makes this the complete saga rather than just the original twelve issues.

Ed Brubaker and Darwyn Cooke rebuild Catwoman as Gotham crime noir: less jewel thief fantasy, more street-level survivor with a neighbourhood to protect and a past that refuses to stay buried. Selina Kyle returns to the East End, where old streets, old wounds and a string of murders pull her back into the life she thought she had escaped. This is one of the strongest Catwoman eras for readers who want atmosphere, moral ambiguity and Gotham seen from below.

DC Versus Marvel Omnibus brings the rare cross-publisher meetings back into one oversized volume: Superman and Spider-Man, Batman and Captain America, the X-Men and Teen Titans, Punisher crossovers and the DC/Marvel battles that were out of print for decades.
