Tommy Monaghan is a contract killer in Gotham with minor psychic powers and a bar full of friends, and Ennis spends this volume methodically taking them away. It contains 'Of Thee I Sing', widely considered one of the finest Superman stories ever written.

John Constantine, Hellblazer by Jamie Delano Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of the run that invented Hellblazer as a genre of its own: political horror set in Thatcher's Britain, where the monsters are usually institutions and John's real weapon is being willing to sacrifice his friends. Delano's Constantine is nastier, funnier and sadder than any version that followed.

Dashiell Bad Horse comes back to the Prairie Rose reservation after fifteen years away, working undercover for the FBI against the tribal boss who runs the new casino. Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera wrote the best crime comic of its decade by refusing to let anyone in it be simply guilty or simply innocent. Bad Horse finally knows who killed his mother, and knowing it does not save anybody. The second omnibus takes Scalped through its last thirty issues, where every character has to pay for the choices made in the first half and Aaron refuses to hand out a single clean ending.

Lucifer Omnibus Vol. 2 collects the second half of Mike Carey's run, in which the created universe starts to fail, the war with Heaven becomes unavoidable, and Lucifer has to decide whether independence is worth what it costs everyone around him. It ends on one of the most satisfying final issues Vertigo ever published.

John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake took on The Spectre in 1992, after acclaimed runs on Suicide Squad and Batman, and made it DC's most serious book about judgement. Ostrander writes theology rather than superheroics: the Spectre has unlimited power and no idea how to use it well, and the run is largely about the difference between vengeance and justice. Mandrake's art is genuinely frightening, and the book is far stranger than anything DC was publishing under its main line. The second Spectre omnibus completes Ostrander and Mandrake's run, one of the longest and least compromising books DC published in the nineties. The back half is where Ostrander stops asking whether the Spectre is right and starts asking whether Jim Corrigan deserves to exist at all. The original series proposal is a genuinely interesting document, it shows how much of the run was planned from the start.

Robert Venditti's first Green Lantern omnibus picks up after the Third Army, with Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardner rebuilding a Corps that has just been decimated. Following Geoff Johns is a hard brief, and Venditti's answer is to break the thing Johns built: the spectrum destabilises, the rings stop being reliable, and Hal has to lead without the certainty the franchise was founded on. It is a more interesting response than continuing the formula. Green Lantern by Robert Venditti Omnibus Vol. 2 follows the Corps under cosmic leadership pressure, shaped by war-scale decisions, spectrum politics and the cost of carrying a ring when every choice echoes outward. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Shade the Changing Man by Peter Milligan and Chris Bachalo, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Shade arrives from Meta wearing a dead man's body to fight the madness spreading through America, and the woman travelling with him is the daughter of the family his host murdered. Milligan and Bachalo turned a Ditko creation into the strangest road trip Vertigo ever published. The second omnibus follows Shade past the point where the madness stops being outside him. Milligan keeps changing the format, the body and the narrator, and the run finishes as one of the few Vertigo series that got to end exactly how its writer wanted.
