Mandrake's art is genuinely frightening, and the book is far stranger than anything DC was publishing under its main line. Background. John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake took on The Spectre in 1992, after acclaimed runs on Suicide Squad and Batman, and made it DC's most serious book about judgement. Jim Corrigan is a murdered policeman returned as the wrath of God, with unlimited power and no idea how to use it well.

What's inside. Vol. 1 collects the first stretch of the run, largely about the difference between vengeance and justice. Vol. 2 collects The Spectre #32-62 and Annual #1, Showcase '95 #8, the character's Who's Who entries, plus new essays by Ostrander and editor Dan Raspler, the original series proposal and a reproduction of the glow-in-the-dark cover.

Why it's worth it. Ostrander writes theology rather than superheroics, and the back half is where he stops asking whether the Spectre is right and starts asking whether Corrigan deserves to exist at all. Mandrake's art is the other half of it: he draws the supernatural as something that damages the page it is printed on. The two volumes are the complete run.
