Description

Background. Tommy Monaghan is a hitman working out of the Cauldron, an Irish working-class neighbourhood of Gotham. During the Bloodlines event an alien parasite bites him and, instead of killing him, triggers his metagene, giving him X-ray vision and telepathy. He turns pro with a niche: he kills super-beings, not ordinary people.

What's inside. Vol. 1 collects The Demon Annual #2, where Tommy debuts, Hitman #1-33 and Annual #1, plus the Ennis and McCrea Demon issues. Vol. 2 collects the second half through to the final issue.

Why it's worth it. Of Thee I Sing, in which Tommy tells Superman what he actually means to people, is regularly named among the best Superman stories ever written despite appearing in a book about a contract killer. Ennis and McCrea made the ending inevitable from the first issue, so the run is one long setup for a farewell and it only works whole.
