Description

Background. Tommy Monaghan is a hitman working out of the Cauldron, an Irish working-class neighborhood of Gotham City. During the Bloodlines event an alien parasite bites him and, instead of killing him, triggers his metagene, granting him X-ray vision and telepathy. He turns pro with a niche: he kills super-beings, not ordinary people. Garth Ennis and John McCrea created one of the sharpest, funniest and most heartfelt corners of 1990s DC.

What's inside. This first omnibus collects The Demon Annual #2 (Tommy's debut in Bloodlines), Hitman #1-33, Hitman Annual #1, and the Ennis/McCrea Demon issues #42-45 and #52-54, with a new introduction by Ennis and a McCrea cover. The stories follow Tommy and the regulars at Noonan's Sleazy Bar, Natt the Hat, the Noonans and others, as he crosses paths with the wider DC universe.

Why it's worth it. Hitman is a benchmark for balancing extreme comedy with heartfelt storytelling, the McCrea/Ennis duo that would go on to Preacher and Ennis's creator-owned work. It's a long-standing cult favorite, regularly cited among the great overlooked runs of 1990s DC, and its quieter Superman story (in Vol. 2) is considered one of the best single issues ever written.
