John McCrea

John McCrea's line is loose, exaggerated and built for comedy and carnage in equal measure. Over a long partnership with writer Garth Ennis, his cartooning grew bolder and more elastic, faces stretch into caricature, violence lands with a punchline's timing, and quiet character beats carry real weight between the gunfights.

His signature work sits in a few key hardcovers. Hitman, his sixty-issue DC series with Ennis, is his masterpiece, Tommy Monaghan's mix of hitman noir, superhero satire and Gotham grime, collected complete in the Hitman omnibus editions. His run on The Demon set up that world, and his art on Ennis's later projects, including The Boys spin-offs, pushes the same sensibility into darker territory.

Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea Omnibus Vol. 1

Hitman by Garth Ennis and John McCrea Omnibus Vol. 1 collects one of DC's great hidden-gem runs. Tommy Monaghan is a Gulf War veteran turned contract killer in the Cauldron, a rough Irish corner of Gotham; a alien bite leaves him with X-ray vision and telepathy, and he sets himself up as the hitman who specializes in killing super-people. Ennis and McCrea, years before their creator-owned fame, blend savage dark comedy with genuine pathos and one of comics' great supporting casts, the regulars of Noonan's bar. Brutal, funny and unexpectedly moving.

Tommy Monaghan is a contract killer in Gotham with minor psychic powers and a bar full of friends, and Ennis spends this volume methodically taking them away. It contains 'Of Thee I Sing', widely considered one of the finest Superman stories ever written.
