Doomsday is the rare villain who works precisely because he has no personality, no motive, no dialogue, just forward motion, and the escalating panel counts across the final issues are one of the smartest formal tricks in mainstream comics. Whatever you think of the stunt, it is the best-selling comic story ever published.

Ta-Nehisi Coates took over Captain America straight after Secret Empire, with the country still processing that a HYDRA version of Steve Rogers had governed it. The run is about a symbol that no longer commands automatic trust. Coates writes Cap as a man arguing with his own myth: framed for murder, driven underground, and forced to work out what the shield means when the people it represents no longer agree on anything. The Power Elite and a reborn Red Skull give the run an antagonist that cannot be punched, which is the point.

JSA by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the 1999 relaunch that made the Justice Society one of DC's flagship titles. Launched by James Robinson and David S. Goyer and quickly defined by Geoff Johns, it reassembles comics' original super-team around a legacy premise: Golden Age veterans mentoring a new generation. This volume introduces Stargirl, a character Johns created in memory of his sister, and delivers the signature early arcs, from "Justice Be Done" to "The Return of Hawkman" and "Virtue and Vice." Art by Stephen Sadowski and Rags Morales.

Begun in black and white for a British anthology in 1982 and finished in colour for DC, V for Vendetta sets anarchy against fascism in a near-future Britain. Moore refuses to make his protagonist comfortable: V is a terrorist and the book never resolves that for the reader. David Lloyd stripped out sound effects, thought balloons and motion lines, leaving only what a camera would catch. The Guy Fawkes mask left the book and entered the street, which very few comics can claim.

Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons took a set of discarded Charlton characters in 1986 and used them to ask what costumed power would actually do to a country. The nine-panel grid, the recurring symbols and the symmetry of chapter five make the structure part of the argument, and the prose sections are not optional, they carry a third of the story. Watchmen is the book almost every deconstruction since is answering, and the deluxe format restores John Higgins' colour choices that cheap paper flattened.

Tom Taylor's DCeased delivers the Anti-Life Equation as a digital virus and lets it move through the Justice League at the speed of their own abilities. The horror comes from competence turned against itself: Superman flies, so the infection flies. Unlike most zombie crossovers Taylor writes the losses as losses, spending pages on relationships before he destroys them. It needs no continuity and it is the best-selling book of its kind DC has published.

Jesse Custer is a small town preacher who loses his congregation, his church and most of his town in one night, and comes out of it with the voice of God and a reason to go looking for the real one. Ennis and Dillon open Preacher with the Saint of Killers on his trail and never slow down.

Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1 begins Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's modern Peter Parker from the ground up: high school pressure, first victories, brutal mistakes and the villains that make growing up as Spider-Man dangerous.

The second half of Straczynski's run takes Spider-Man through Civil War and ends with One More Day, the most argued-about Spider-Man story of the century. The Other, Civil War and Back in Black are all here, along with Peter unmasking publicly and then losing everything for it. One More Day is the ending Straczynski publicly disowned, and reading the run complete is the only way to judge whether the deal with Mephisto was earned. Historically, this volume matters more than most.

Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 1 is the foundation of Peter Parker as a different kind of superhero: insecurity, guilt, jokes, money trouble and responsibility all arriving at once. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduce the origin, Aunt May, J. Jonah Jameson and the villains who shape Spider-Man's earliest mythology.

J. Michael Straczynski wrote Amazing Spider-Man for six years, opening with a stranger in Peter's kitchen who claims his powers are not an accident. Ezekiel and the totemic origin are the run's contested idea, but the volume's real strength is elsewhere: Peter teaching at his old school, Aunt May discovering the costume in a scene that ranks among the best pages in the character's history, and John Romita Jr. drawing the whole thing. The renumbering back to #500 happens here too.

Ultimate Spider-Man ran for over a decade without a reboot, and this third omnibus covers the years when Brian Michael Bendis let his teenage Peter Parker actually grow up. Mark Bagley finishes his record-breaking run here and Stuart Immonen takes over, and the book handles the transition better than most. This stretch contains the Clone Saga rewrite — Bendis fixing in twelve issues what took the main universe two years to ruin — and the Ultimate Knights arc. It also builds toward the death of Peter Parker.

Jonathan Hickman wrote Avengers and New Avengers as a single three-year story about two problems: a universe expanding beyond what heroes can protect, and a secret council willing to destroy worlds to save this one. The two titles are designed to be read alternating: Avengers is scale and optimism, New Avengers is the Illuminati quietly deciding who dies. Infinity is where they meet. It is the most structurally ambitious Avengers run ever published, and it builds directly to Secret Wars.

Way of X is Simon Spurrier's corner of Krakoa: the book that asked what a society with no death actually believes, and put Nightcrawler in charge of finding out. Resurrection makes murder meaningless, and Spurrier is the only writer who treated that as a moral crisis rather than a plot convenience. Nightcrawler drafting a mutant religion is the throughline, and X-Men Blue: Origins is here too — the issue that finally settled Nightcrawler's parentage after forty years.

In 1975 Giant-Size X-Men #1 replaced a cancelled book's cast with an international team, and a young Chris Claremont took over the writing. He stayed for sixteen years. This is the foundation of everything the X-Men have been since: the Dark Phoenix Saga begins here, Jean Grey becomes Phoenix, and the book shifts from a cancelled sixties title to Marvel's flagship. Claremont's habit of writing soap opera around the superheroics starts on page one of #94.

X-Men: The Messiah Trilogy Omnibus collects the complete Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming — Hope Summers, the first mutant born after M-Day, and the war for mutantkind's future. The complete Messiah Complex (2007), Messiah War (2009) and Second Coming (2010) collected in one volume — the trilogy that defined the post-Decimation X-Men. Hope Summers, the first mutant born after M-Day, is the key to mutantkind's survival. Cable takes her into the future to protect her. The X-Men and X-Force fight through time to bring her back. Second Coming ends with a death that reshapes the team forever. Over 1,An oversized volume of the highest-stakes X-Men storytelling of the 2000s.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Omnibus Vol. 1 begins the controversial post-One More Day reset, returning Peter Parker to a single, struggling, unlucky status quo while Amazing Spider-Man shifts to rotating creative teams and rapid publication rhythm. It is messy history, but it is also the rebuild of modern Peter.

Superior Spider-Man is the year Doctor Octopus wore Peter Parker's body and ran his life, convinced he could do it better. Dan Slott wrote it after eight years of building toward exactly this. The premise works because Otto genuinely is better at parts of it: he finishes Peter's doctorate, upgrades the equipment and dismantles the rogues' gallery. What he cannot do is be a person people want around, and the run is about that gap closing. Amazing #700 is here, which is where the swap becomes permanent.

Grant Morrison took over X-Men in 2001 and rebuilt it as science fiction about a species: the school opened to hundreds of students, mutants became a culture with fashion and drugs, and the costumes went black. Morrison's premise is that mutants are winning demographically and nobody has noticed, which reframes the whole franchise. Genosha's destruction in the first issue kills sixteen million people and the book never lets you forget it. Frank Quitely, Igor Kordey and Chris Bachalo draw it, and every X-Men run since has been either extending this or reacting against it.

The sixth Amazing omnibus covers the late seventies, including Marv Wolfman's complete run as writer and editor on the title. Wolfman's stretch introduced the Black Cat, who has been in Spider-Man's life ever since, and pushed the book toward the crime-adjacent tone it kept through the eighties. The F.O.O.M. and calendar material is the kind of thing that only appears in omnibus editions and never gets reprinted otherwise.

Rick Remender's Uncanny X-Force is the run where a black-ops mutant team decides who deserves to die, and then has to live with every answer. The Dark Angel Saga is the high point — Archangel's transformation into Apocalypse's heir, and Psylocke forced to choose — but the run's real subject is what killing costs a team that has convinced itself it is necessary. Jerome Opeña and Esad Ribić draw it, and it is widely considered the best X-book of the 2010s.

The fifth Ultimate Spider-Man omnibus is the end of Peter Parker's story in that universe, and the beginning of Miles Morales'. Death of Spider-Man is here, and it is one of the few superhero deaths that held: Peter dies at sixteen, in front of his family, and stays dead for years. Ultimate Fallout #4 is the first appearance of Miles Morales. Ultimate Marvel Team-Up is the other draw — early Bendis with artists like Bill Sienkiewicz and Mike Allred.

Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky Omnibus Vol. 1 begins with Matt Murdock shattered after a violent mistake in Hell's Kitchen. Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto rebuild Daredevil through guilt, faith, law and Wilson Fisk's New York, while Elektra moves closer to the centre of the mythos.

Jed MacKay's Moon Knight is a major modern creative statement on the character. Setting Marc Spector up as the proprietor of the Midnight Mission, a sanctuary for those touched by the night, MacKay merges supernatural detective work with the psychological complexity the character demands.
