Background. Barry Allen's Flash is the book that started the Silver Age: a police scientist struck by lightning, a costume kept in a ring, and a rogues' gallery built on gimmicks that somehow became the best supporting cast in superhero comics.

What's inside. Vol. 1 covers the launch, by John Broome, Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino. Vol. 2 covers the years when the Rogues settle into place and Gardner Fox joins. Vol. 3 covers the later stretch, with the time travel and multiverse stories that came out of Flash of Two Worlds.

Why it's worth it. Infantino is the reason these read as well as they do: he invented the visual language for drawing speed, the trailing figures and the ribbon of motion, and every Flash artist since has worked inside it. Three volumes cover the era in publication order, which matters here because the Rogues and the multiverse are both built one issue at a time.
