Marvel & DC Omnibus

Ultimate X-Men launched in 2001 as part of Marvel's attempt to restart its universe for readers who had never bought a comic, with Mark Millar rewriting the team from scratch and no continuity behind it. The Ultimate line is the clearest entry point Marvel has ever built: no back issues, no reboots to explain, and a Magneto written as an actual terrorist rather than a tragic antagonist. Millar's version is also the closest the comics ever came to the tone of the first X-Men films, which is why it still gets recommended to new readers.

The Silver Age Superman is the version most people picture: the Fortress of Solitude, Krypto, the bottle city of Kandor and a supporting cast that grew every month. This is where Superman's mythology gets built: Brainiac and Kandor in Action #242, Bizarro, Supergirl's arrival, and the Phantom Zone. The stories are constructed as puzzles rather than fights, Superman usually wins by working something out, which is a very different character from the one who preceded and followed.

Charlie Huston's 2006 Moon Knight relaunch was a deliberate act of creative violence against the character's previous incarnations. Huston wrote Marc Spector as a broken man — knees shattered, psychology fractured, the multiple personalities no longer a quirk but a crisis — and the result was one of the darker modern Moon Knight runs Marvel had published.

Excalibur was the X-Men book set in Britain, launched by Chris Claremont and Alan Davis with a cast assembled from survivors: Nightcrawler, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Summers, Captain Britain and Meggan. This third volume is the Warren Ellis stretch, when the book drops the whimsy and becomes a story about black ops, Britain's superhuman bureaucracy and Pete Wisdom. Including Pryde and Wisdom matters: it is where the Kitty and Wisdom relationship gets its own miniseries and is otherwise very hard to find.

The fourth Bronze Age omnibus takes the Justice League into the early eighties, the last years before Crisis on Infinite Earths changed everything. The Leaf Candy mini comic is a genuine curiosity, a promotional giveaway that has never been collected anywhere else. The main run includes the New Gods crossover in #183-185, which is Gerry Conway writing Darkseid at full scale, and the Firestorm and Titans tie-ins that show DC's line starting to interconnect.

Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness delivered one of the most visually spectacular Hulk runs in the character's history, built around a simple but electrifying premise: a Red Hulk. The mysterious Rulk tore through the Marvel Universe, defeating Thor, Iron Man, and the Watcher himself in rapid succession, and no one knew who was under the red skin. This omnibus collects the full Loeb run that launched the Red Hulk concept and triggered a wave of gamma-powered characters. McGuinness's art is pure kinetic energy — oversized, dynamic, and designed for maximum impact. It's a blockbuster run that prioritizes spectacle, delivered with genuine craft.

William Messner-Loebs wrote The Flash for four years after Crisis on Infinite Earths, taking Wally West from Barry Allen's replacement to a character with his own life. Messner-Loebs wrote Wally as broke, insecure and a worse hero than his predecessor, which is the honest version and the one Mark Waid later built on. Greg LaRocque draws most of it. Much of this run has been out of print for decades, which makes the omnibus the only realistic way to read it.

The second Bronze Age Justice League omnibus covers the early 1970s, when the team left their secret New England cave for a satellite in orbit and the stories went cosmic. This is where the JLA/JSA team-ups settle into their yearly rhythm and the multiverse becomes a working part of DC's storytelling rather than an occasional gimmick. It is also the era that established the League as DC's legends rather than just its biggest team.

X-23 is the most fully realized Wolverine spin-off character ever created — Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost conceived her as a female clone of Wolverine weaponized from birth, used as an assassin by the Weapon X program offshoot known as the Facility, and their work establishing her origin in the animated series was adapted into the comics in one of the medium's most harrowing backstory sequences. The first omnibus covers her origin and early missions, establishing the psychological damage that Tom Taylor would later translate into Marvel's best all-ages superhero series.

Fantastic Four #1 started the Marvel Universe in 1961, and the Lee and Kirby run that followed invented most of what the company still sells. This is the stretch where the run becomes extraordinary: the Inhumans, the Negative Zone, Doctor Doom's origin in Annual #2 and the arrival of Galactus and the Silver Surfer in #48-50 — the single most influential three issues Marvel published in the sixties. The second Spectre omnibus completes Ostrander and Mandrake's run, one of the longest and least compromising books DC published in the nineties. The back half is where Ostrander stops asking whether the Spectre is right and starts asking whether Jim Corrigan deserves to exist at all. The original series proposal is a genuinely interesting document, it shows how much of the run was planned from the start.

Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 4 focuses on the early Gotham years, with Batman and Robin shaped by crime, disguise, strange schemes and the growing rhythm of Batman and Robin as a team. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Joe Kelly's Deadpool is the run that turned a Rob Liefeld mercenary into the character the films are based on: funny, aware of the fourth wall, and genuinely sad underneath. Kelly's Deadpool is a hired killer who wants to be liked and is very bad at it, and the run keeps undercutting the comedy with genuine loneliness. Blind Al and Weasel are created here, and issue #11 — the one where Deadpool is edited into a 1960s Spider-Man comic — is still the best gag the character has had.

Dan Slott's Fantastic Four run began in 2018 and immediately engaged with the team's foundational mythology in ambitious ways — exploring the nature of Richards family intelligence across generations, the Griever's attempt to destroy all that the FF have created, and the team's return to active duty after a period of absence.

The second Mighty Thor omnibus continues the Lee and Kirby run at the point where Asgard stops being a backdrop and becomes the subject. Kirby's late-sixties Thor is where his cosmic period begins — the designs, the machinery, the gods drawn as forces rather than people — and it leads directly into the Fourth World he built at DC. Everything Marvel has done with Asgard since is working from these pages.

Captain America Lives! — Ed Brubaker's triumphant conclusion to the Death of Captain America storyline, featuring Steve Rogers' return to life and the shield. This omnibus collects the Reborn miniseries and its aftermath, as Brubaker orchestrates one of the most satisfying character returns in comics history. The reunion of Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and the supporting cast Brubaker spent years building pays off spectacularly, with Bryan Hitch delivering some of the most stunning Captain America artwork ever committed to the page.

The Flash: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 2 focuses on Barry Allen's Silver Age world, with the Flash shaped by science-fiction tricks, Rogue trouble and the clean visual language of speed. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm.

The second New Avengers omnibus covers Bendis' run through Civil War, Secret Invasion and Dark Reign, when the team spent years as fugitives. The Illuminati miniseries is the important piece: it retroactively puts Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Professor X and the others in a room making decisions for everyone, and it underpins everything Marvel published for the next decade. The underground years are also the best character work Bendis did on the title.

Secret Wars: Battleworld Omnibus Vol. 2 collects another wave of 2015 Battleworld tie-ins, with Doom's patchwork reality turning Marvel characters into domain-level conflicts, alternate versions and genre experiments.

The second Avengers omnibus continues the Silver Age run through the period when the team fully established its identity distinct from its founding members — the Cap's Kooky Quartet era, where Captain America led a team of reformed villains (Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver) while the original Avengers stepped back. Stan Lee and then Roy Thomas built a book that proved the team concept could work without relying on its most popular members, a structural experiment that defined how Marvel managed ensemble casts going forward.

The third Avengers omnibus covers the Roy Thomas years, when the book stopped being a rotating guest-star showcase and became a soap opera with a fixed cast. This volume opens with the wedding of the Wasp and Yellowjacket and contains the Kree-Skrull War build-up, Ultron's return as Ultron-6, and the Vision joining the team. Thomas is the writer who made the Avengers a continuing story rather than a monthly team-up, and this is where that shift happens.

Classic third volume with Roy Thomas on script and Herb Trimpe on art: the era when the Hulk ceases to be "that weird Marvel character" and becomes a cultural phenomenon, culminating in the 1970s TV series. Thomas introduces emotional nuances that Stan Lee had barely explored, paving the way for Peter David.

The Mighty Thor Omnibus Vol. 5 closes the classic pre-Simonson stretch, with Gerry Conway, Len Wein and John Buscema guiding Thor through late Bronze Age Asgard before the next generational change. The value is transition: old mythic machinery preparing to hand the hammer forward. Its shelf value is transition: the late Bronze Age Thor machine preparing the ground for the next great reinvention while still rooted in Buscema's classical Asgard.

The final chapter of the original Excalibur series, collecting the team's last adventures before the book's cancellation and relaunch. The roster continues to evolve with new members while classic relationships are tested. Bryan Hitch and Salvador Larroca provide dynamic art as the team faces threats from both the multiverse and closer to home. This omnibus also includes the Colossus one-shot exploring Peter Rasputin's grief after Illyana's death, New Mutants: Truth or Death, the Kitty Pryde Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. mini-series, and X-Men: True Friends — a Kitty and Rachel time-travel story by Claremont. It's a comprehensive collection that brings closure to one of the most distinctive X-Men spinoffs ever published.
