Bill Mantlo Omnibus: The Complete Collector's Guide

Bill Mantlo is the most available writer on our shelves and probably the one you have heard least about. That combination is not an accident: for most of the last forty years his two best books could not legally be reprinted at all, so no reputation had a chance to build around them.

The books are Rom and Micronauts. Both began as comics commissioned to sell toys. Both are far better than that origin suggests, which is the entire reason this shelf is worth your attention.

Two toy licences that became science fiction

Rom is about a knight who gave up his body to fight a shapeshifting invasion, and who is therefore mistaken for a monster by the people he is protecting. That premise — a hero who cannot be recognised as one — runs for the entire series and gives Mantlo something genuinely sad to write about every issue.

Micronauts is a space opera about a rebellion inside a subatomic universe, and it is where Mantlo is at his most inventive with scale: characters cross between worlds by shrinking, and the stakes stay personal while the settings get absurd.

Neither is a comic that winks at you about being a toy tie-in. Mantlo wrote them straight, and that is why they survived their own marketing.

Why they vanished, and what that means for the price

For decades these stories were effectively unreprintable. The comics were built on licensed toy properties, and the rights to the characters and the rights to Marvel's stories about them did not sit in the same hands. Collections were impossible until that was untangled, which is why these omnibus are recent arrivals rather than long-standing catalogue staples.

The practical consequence: there is no deep back catalogue of cheap second-hand printings to undercut them. What exists is what exists.

What you actually buy

Both series are sold here as complete two-volume sets rather than as separate books. Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1-2 runs to 1,368 pages, and Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1-2 to 1,632 pages. Those totals are exactly the sum of the individual volumes, so the set is the whole run and not an abridgement.

The rest of his shelf

Away from the licences, Mantlo wrote a long stretch of Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man, collected here as a 928-page omnibus. It is solid, workmanlike Spider-Man from an era when the character was being written every month by whoever was reliable — enjoyable, but not the reason to seek him out.

He also co-created Rocket Raccoon and created Cloak and Dagger, which is a strange legacy for a writer this obscure: two properties that outgrew him completely while his own best work stayed out of print.

Where to start

One recommendation: Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1-2. It has the stronger central idea, it is the shorter of the two sets, and if the tone works for you the Micronauts set will too. Starting with Micronauts is not wrong, but 1,632 pages is a large bet on an unfamiliar writer.

Who should skip this shelf

This is late-seventies and eighties Marvel, with the dense captioning and the monthly-deadline plotting that implies. If you have bounced off comics of that period before, Mantlo will not be the exception that converts you — his strength is premise and sincerity, not formal innovation. And if you are buying purely as an investment, be honest that you are betting on a writer with no mainstream profile.
