Nightwing: Year One tells the story DC had left as a gap for twenty years: how Dick Grayson stopped being Robin and became something of his own. Chuck Dixon wrote Nightwing for a decade and this is his retrospective origin: Batman fires Dick, and the story is about a young man discovering that being cut loose is the best thing that could have happened. Scott McDaniel draws movement better than anyone who has handled the character since.

When Annihilus led his Annihilation Wave out of the Negative Zone, the Marvel cosmic universe was never the same. Keith Giffen orchestrated a sprawling, brutal war story that swept away decades of status quo and repositioned characters like Nova, Silver Surfer, and Drax as serious cosmic powerhouses. This omnibus collects the complete Annihilation saga — the prologue one-shots, the Silver Surfer, Super-Skrull, Nova, and Ronan tie-in miniseries, and the main six-issue Annihilation event series.

The fourth Golden Age Superman omnibus covers the war years, when the character was selling bonds on the covers and the stories were carefully avoiding the front. The editorial decision to keep Superman out of the war, the official explanation was that he would end it too quickly, is visible throughout, and it makes the volume a genuine document of how American comics handled a conflict they could not address directly. Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Prankster both debut in this period.

The Silver Age is where Batman left noir behind for science fiction: aliens, transformations, Bat-Mite and Ace the Bat-Hound, published under a comics code that had banned almost everything else. This era is usually dismissed and then quietly enjoyed. The stories are absurd by design, Batman turned into a giant, a genie, an alien, but they are also where the supporting cast expands beyond Robin and Gordon for the first time. Kathy Kane's debut in Detective Comics #233 is the historically significant one.

Strange Academy launched in 2020 as Marvel's answer to the magical school genre — a Doctor Strange-run institution for young magic users from across the Marvel Universe and beyond. Skottie Young brings a tone that balances genuine darkness with adventure-forward storytelling, creating something that reads freshly compared to most Marvel launches of its era. Collects Strange Academy #1–18 (). The school roster includes students from Asgard, New Orleans, Limbo, and the Dark Dimension.

Gail Simone's Birds of Prey is the run that made Oracle, Black Canary and Huntress one of DC's most durable teams, built on competence rather than superpowers. Simone writes Barbara Gordon as the most dangerous person in any room she is in, which is the correct read and one very few writers managed. The Lady Shiva arc is the run's peak, a fight Black Canary cannot win and has to survive anyway, and the humour never undercuts the threat.

The second Longbow Hunters omnibus completes Mike Grell's Green Arrow, taking Oliver Queen through the back half of a run that never returned him to superheroics. The Wonder Year is the retold origin, written after eighty issues of establishing who the character had become, and it is far better than most retrospective origins. Shado: Song of the Dragon gives the run's most important supporting character her own book, which is otherwise almost impossible to find.

The third Daredevil omnibus covers the mid-seventies, the years immediately before Frank Miller arrived and changed the character permanently. The Amazing Adventures material is the Black Widow's first solo series, which is difficult to find collected anywhere else. The Daredevil issues themselves are the last stretch of the character as a conventional superhero, which makes this the volume that sets the baseline Miller would react against.

Daniel Way's second omnibus volume continues his record-breaking Deadpool run through the Deadpool Corps concept — a multiverse team of Deadpool variants including Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool, and the genuinely inspired Headpool — and into the post-Siege Marvel landscape. Way stretched the franchise concept to its logical extreme while maintaining a consistent comedic voice across the massive cast of self-aware killers, and the Corps concept proved popular enough to spawn its own spinoff series.

Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley reimagined the Hulk for a new era with a concept that is both simple and genuinely disturbing: Bruce Banner has trapped the Savage Hulk inside a mental construct resembling a massive starship, piloting him like a weapon. The Starship Hulk premise allowed Cates to explore the Banner/Hulk relationship in a fresh way while Ottley — best known for his decade-long run on Invincible — brought explosive, large-scale action that pushed the book's visual ambition to new heights. This is one of the most distinctive modern Hulk runs, collecting a complete creative vision in a single oversized volume.

Jason Aaron's Wolverine run opens with Logan's soul dragged to Hell while his body is possessed and turned loose on his friends. It is the most literal-minded revenge story of Aaron's career and the run that led straight into X-Men: Schism. Aaron writes Hell as a family reunion — Logan's dead relatives and enemies are waiting for him — and the escape is the easy part; the consequences are not. Including Schism matters, because the run ends with Logan and Cyclops splitting the X-Men, and this is the volume that shows why the argument was inevitable.

Injustice 2 continues the world of the fighting game, five years after Superman's regime fell and with the survivors trying to rebuild a planet that no longer trusts anyone in a cape. Tom Taylor treats the aftermath seriously: Batman has won and now has to govern, which he is worse at than fighting. The book is also a clean entry point, no prior comics required, only the premise, and it gives Damian Wayne, Harley Quinn and the Suicide Squad some of their best material outside continuity.

Inferno is the crossover where the X-Men's demonic subplot finally arrives: Limbo invades Manhattan, Madelyne Pryor becomes the Goblin Queen, and X-Factor has to confront what Cyclops did to her. Inferno resolves plots Claremont had been running for five years and does it while every building in New York is alive. It also gives Madelyne Pryor the arc that made her a permanent part of the mythos, right up to Dark Web thirty years later. The Spider-Man and Avengers tie-ins are where the citywide scale actually lands.

Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 8 follows the mature Golden Age Batman machine, shaped by pulp mystery, costumed crime, Robin-driven movement and bright newspaper-era invention. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Nightwing: The Prince of Gotham Omnibus follows Dick Grayson through the New 52 period, where Haly's Circus, Gotham's secrets and Forever Evil push his public and private identities to breaking point. Kyle Higgins writes Nightwing as mobile, exposed and emotionally open in a way that separates him from Batman's shadow. The value is character clarity: this is Dick trying to own the symbol, the city connections and the cost of being seen.

Nightwing: The Rebirth Deluxe Edition Book 2 continues Tim Seeley's run, with Dick Grayson settled in Blüdhaven and finally allowed to be a hero in his own city rather than a satellite of Gotham. Seeley writes him as the most socially competent member of the Bat-family, and Javier Fernández draws him as an acrobat first.

The fourth Peter David omnibus takes his Hulk run to its end, through the years when Banner lost the Hulk entirely and the book had to work out what was left. The final stretch is genuinely bleak: Betty Ross dies, the merged personality fractures, and David writes an issue about grief that has almost no action in it. His departure from the title was public and acrimonious, which makes the ending here the real conclusion of a twelve-year run rather than a handover.

Following the original Annihilation wave, the Marvel cosmic universe faced a second devastating threat: the Phalanx, a techno-organic collective seizing control of the Kree Empire and everything beyond. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning crafted the event that would define cosmic Marvel for a generation.

Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 9 follows Batman and Robin deep into their Golden Age groove, shaped by colourful villains, quick cases and a Gotham that already feels like Batman's natural habitat. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 10 closes the later Golden Age material with Gotham fully established as a place of criminals, masks, gadgets and theatrical danger. Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Dick Sprang, Jim Mooney and Sheldon Moldoff show Batman and Robin in a world where the formula has confidence, speed and bright pulp momentum.

Brian Michael Bendis relaunched the Avengers in 2004 after Disassembled, with a roster nobody expected: Spider-Man, Wolverine and Luke Cage on the same team. The roster is the argument: putting Marvel's biggest sellers in one book was commercially obvious and creatively risky, and Bendis made it work by writing the team as people who argue in kitchens. This is also where the modern Avengers — the version the films drew on — actually starts.
