Web of Spider-Man was the fourth monthly Spider-Man title, launched in 1985, and it spent its run being the place where other people's ideas got tested. The writing roster alone is the argument: Gerry Conway, Christopher Priest, Peter David, Fabian Nicieza, Steve Gerber and David Michelinie, each getting a few issues. It also carries the Inferno crossover chapters and Spider-Man's brief run with cosmic powers, both of which are hard to find collected elsewhere.

Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom run is the most consequential take on the character since the original McFarlane era — introducing Knull, the King in Black, a god of darkness who created the symbiotes as weapons of conquest billions of years before Venom bonded with Eddie Brock. What started as a horror-inflected superhero title escalated into a universe-shaking mythology that recontextualized every symbiote story ever told. Stegman's kinetic, visceral artwork matched Cates's cosmic ambition panel for panel.

Nick Spencer wrote Amazing Spider-Man for four years with a single goal: undoing One More Day and putting Peter and Mary Jane back together without a reset button. Volume 1 is the setup: Peter's doctorate collapsing, Mary Jane back in his life, and the Hunted arc, in which Kraven turns Central Park into a hunting ground. Spencer writes the supporting cast better than anyone since the nineties, and Ryan Ottley and Humberto Ramos make it look like a mainstream Spider-Man book should.

The fourth Amazing omnibus is the Gerry Conway and Ross Andru era in full: Peter Parker after Gwen's death, working out how to keep going. This stretch contains the original Clone Saga — the 1975 storyline that Marvel would revisit disastrously twenty years later — plus the debuts of the Punisher, Hammerhead and the Jackal. It is also where Mary Jane moves from background character to lead, which is the quiet structural work that made the next four decades possible.

Inferno Prologue gathers the year of setup before the demons arrive: Madelyne Pryor's slow collapse, the X-Terminators, and the subplots Claremont and Louise Simonson had been feeding since Mutant Massacre. Inferno is famous, but it only works if you have seen Madelyne abandoned, her child taken and her offer accepted — and that is all here. This volume also contains the Australian era at its best, with the X-Men presumed dead and using that freedom to operate as outlaws.

PRH presents this volume as an action-heavy X-Men era where Gambit takes the spotlight. It sits in the late-1990s mutant line, with multiple squads, side missions and character changes running in parallel. This is a focused shelf for the X-Men between major crossover beats. It works because it shows the line breathing through character spotlights and connected subplots, with Gambit as the emotional hook.

The first Clone Saga omnibus covers the opening year, when Ben Reilly returns to New York after five years away and Peter Parker's certainty about who he is starts to erode. The early months are much better than the saga's reputation suggests: two men with the same memories, neither certain which is the copy, written as tragedy rather than as a twist. This volume also contains Aunt May's death — the one Marvel later undid — and the Kaine material that made him a lasting character.

Ann Nocenti wrote Daredevil for four years in the late eighties with John Romita Jr., and used a street-level superhero book to write about politics, ecology and abuse. Nocenti created Typhoid Mary, who remains the most dangerous thing in Matt Murdock's life, and issue #254 is her debut. The run also contains Romita Jr.'s Inferno crossover chapters, drawn as full horror. It is the most politically explicit run Marvel published in the decade and it has aged remarkably well.

Barbara Gordon can walk again and has to prove to Batman and to Gotham that she is still Batgirl. Gail Simone writes the entire New 52 run as a story about recovery that never pretends the wheelchair years did not happen, and gives Barbara the best villain of her career in the Knightfall arc.

New Mutants was the first X-Men spin-off, launched by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982 to do what Uncanny no longer could: follow teenagers actually learning to use their powers. Including the graphic novel that launched the team and the Magik miniseries matters: Illyana's seven years in Limbo are the darkest thing Marvel published for a young cast that decade, and they explain the character every later writer keeps returning to. Bill Sienkiewicz arrives near the end of this volume and changes what the book looks like entirely.

Ed Brubaker took over Daredevil directly from Bendis, with Matt Murdock already in prison and his identity already public — a starting position most writers would have reset. Brubaker keeps every problem he inherited and adds more: the prison arc, the move to Europe, and the return of a character Matt had every reason to believe was dead. It is the closest Marvel has come to publishing a straight crime serial, and Lark's art is deliberately unglamorous throughout.

Ultimate Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 2 is where Bendis and Bagley prove the Ultimate version can sustain long-form Spider-Man drama, not just retell the origin. Ultimate Venom, Kraven and Peter's wider Marvel contact expand the world without losing teen intimacy. The value is momentum: Bendis and Bagley turning the alternate universe into a sustained Spider-Man shelf through dialogue, consequence and Peter's expanding Marvel world.

Ms. Marvel launched in 2014 with Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager from New Jersey, and became the most successful new Marvel character in decades. G. Willow Wilson writes Kamala as a fan first — she has been writing Avengers fanfiction, and getting powers is the best thing that has ever happened to her. The religious and family material is specific rather than decorative, and Adrian Alphona's art gives Jersey City a genuine texture. It reads with no prior Marvel knowledge.

J.M. DeMatteis and Sal Buscema spent five years on Spectacular Spider-Man doing what the other titles could not: slow, psychological stories about the people around Peter Parker breaking down. Kraven's Last Hunt gets the attention, but this is the run that followed it, and Soul of the Hunter is its direct sequel. The Harry Osborn arc across #178-200 is the best Green Goblin material Marvel has published: a friend deteriorating in public, with Peter unable to stop it. Buscema draws grief better than action, and DeMatteis lets him.

Spider-Man by Todd McFarlane Omnibus collects McFarlane's solo Spider-Man title, where his writing and art push the character into a darker, more stylised early-1990s mode. The volume is centred on stories such as Torment, with the Lizard, supernatural atmosphere and exaggerated movement defining the book's identity.

Spider-Verse (2014) and Spider-Geddon (2018) are the two crossovers that turned every Spider-Man from every reality into a single cast, and made Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk and Peni Parker permanent parts of Marvel. Both events in one book is the whole argument: read separately they feel like sprawl, read together they are one story about the Inheritors hunting a species. This is also the origin point for the Spider-Verse films' cast, which makes it the single most requested Spider-Man omnibus for readers arriving from the screen.

Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye is one of the most critically acclaimed Marvel series of the modern era — a street-level, deeply human story about Clint Barton trying to be a hero in his own neighborhood, and his protégé Kate Bishop doing the same across the country.

In 1991 Chris Claremont's seventeen-year X-Men run entered its final stretch with Jim Lee on art, a pairing that redefined how the characters looked and led directly to the best-selling comic of all time. This is where Lee arrives and the book changes register: the team is officially dead to the world, operating out of the Outback, and Claremont uses that freedom for some of his strangest material before the 1991 relaunch. Jubilee's debut in #244 alone makes the volume historically necessary.

Jim Starlin created Thanos in 1973 and spent two decades building the character into one of Marvel's greatest cosmic villains. This omnibus collects Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet-era Thanos work — the stories that transformed a B-list villain who worshipped Death into the existential threat that defined an entire era of Marvel cosmic storytelling.

The second Chip Zdarsky omnibus covers the end of his Daredevil run and Devil's Reign, the event in which Wilson Fisk uses the mayor's office to outlaw superheroes. Zdarsky's long game pays off here: Elektra takes over as Daredevil and is better at it, Matt runs a criminal fraternity from inside prison, and Devil's Reign turns a personal grudge into city-wide policy. Woman Without Fear is the best Elektra material in decades, and it is essential to the main run rather than a spin-off.

Weapon X: The Return collects Marvel's early-2000s attempt to build a whole line out of the programme that made Wolverine, run this time as a corporate operation recruiting mutants by force. Frank Tieri writes it as workplace horror: mutants conscripted, processed and disposed of by an organisation with an HR department. The Draft one-shots are the interesting part, giving minor characters like Marrow and Wild Child the only sustained attention they have ever had. Almost none of this material is in print elsewhere.

Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 2 moves the original series into the John Romita Sr. era, where Peter Parker's world becomes brighter, more romantic and more socially tangled. Mary Jane Watson steps fully onto the stage, the Kingpin arrives, and Spider-Man's supporting cast starts to feel like a living Marvel soap opera.

Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev spent five years on Daredevil writing it as a crime series where the superhero elements were almost incidental. The run's defining move is in #32: a tabloid prints Matt Murdock's name and he cannot deny it, so he sues, and the book spends years on the legal and personal fallout instead of undoing it. Maleev's photorealistic Hell's Kitchen set the visual template for every street-level Marvel book since, including the television adaptation.

Before Infinity Gauntlet, Jim Starlin spent years establishing who Thanos was and why he worshipped Death. This omnibus collects the origin material and early cosmic battles that made Thanos something other than a standard villain: a true believer whose nihilism has theological roots. It covers the foundational Starlin Thanos material that Infinity Gauntlet was built upon.
