Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang rewrote Wonder Woman for the New 52 as Greek mythology rather than superheroics: a family drama where the family are gods. Chiang and Azzarello redesign the entire Greek pantheon as unnerving modern figures, and the horror register they use for the gods is unlike anything else in DC's line. It is the most critically praised Wonder Woman run of the modern era and it reads completely standalone.

Grant Morrison relaunched the Justice League in 1997 with the original seven members and a simple thesis: they are gods, and the stories should be that size. Morrison writes each arc as an escalation that should be impossible to top and then tops it: angels, an invading White Martian fleet, and a villain who has already won by page one. Earth 2 with Quitely is the standout, a world where evil always wins, and the League cannot fix it. It is the template for every League run since.

Elseworlds: Batman Omnibus Vol. 1 collects alternate Batmen built from what-if energy: gothic reinventions, historical shadows, strange genres and versions of Bruce Wayne that reveal the core of the character by changing everything around him. The pleasure is seeing how flexible Batman becomes when Gotham is allowed to mutate.

The Flash by Joshua Williamson Omnibus Vol. 1 launches Barry Allen into a modern DC run built on momentum, mystery and emotional strain. Carmine Di Giandomenico, Davide Gianfelice and Howard Porter give the speed a sharp visual pulse while Williamson rebuilds the hero's world around legacy and consequence.

John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake took on The Spectre in 1992, after acclaimed runs on Suicide Squad and Batman, and made it DC's most serious book about judgement. Ostrander writes theology rather than superheroics: the Spectre has unlimited power and no idea how to use it well, and the run is largely about the difference between vengeance and justice. Mandrake's art is genuinely frightening, and the book is far stranger than anything DC was publishing under its main line.

New Teen Titans Omnibus Vol. 1 follows the beginning of the Wolfman and Pérez Titans era, shaped by Robin, Starfire, Raven, Cyborg, Beast Boy, Wonder Girl and Kid Flash finding a shared emotional engine. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Supergirl relaunched for the New 52 as a teenager who arrives on Earth angry, grieving and unwilling to accept that Krypton is gone. The Red Lantern arc is the run's most interesting stretch: Kara's rage qualifies her for a ring, and the book takes her anger seriously instead of treating it as a phase to be corrected. The Cyborg Superman reveal, that he is her father, is also one of the New 52's better retcons.

Deathstroke: The Terminator is Slade Wilson before the modern antihero polish, moving through contracts, family damage and the hard-edged DC action of the early 1990s. Marv Wolfman and Steve Erwin make him dangerous because he is not just skilled; he is controlled, compromised and always carrying the cost of his own choices.

The Silver Age Superman is the version most people picture: the Fortress of Solitude, Krypto, the bottle city of Kandor and a supporting cast that grew every month. This is where Superman's mythology gets built: Brainiac and Kandor in Action #242, Bizarro, Supergirl's arrival, and the Phantom Zone. The stories are constructed as puzzles rather than fights, Superman usually wins by working something out, which is a very different character from the one who preceded and followed.

William Messner-Loebs wrote The Flash for four years after Crisis on Infinite Earths, taking Wally West from Barry Allen's replacement to a character with his own life. Messner-Loebs wrote Wally as broke, insecure and a worse hero than his predecessor, which is the honest version and the one Mark Waid later built on. Greg LaRocque draws most of it. Much of this run has been out of print for decades, which makes the omnibus the only realistic way to read it.

The second Spectre omnibus completes Ostrander and Mandrake's run, one of the longest and least compromising books DC published in the nineties. The back half is where Ostrander stops asking whether the Spectre is right and starts asking whether Jim Corrigan deserves to exist at all. The original series proposal is a genuinely interesting document, it shows how much of the run was planned from the start.

The Flash by Geoff Johns Omnibus Vol. 3 focuses on Geoff Johns's Flash mythology, with the Flash family shaped by Rogues, legacy, Speed Force consequences and emotional pressure around the costume. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Knightsend is the third act of Knightfall: Bruce Wayne has recovered, Jean-Paul Valley is still wearing the cowl, and he has no intention of giving it back. Knightfall broke Batman and KnightQuest showed the replacement failing; this is the volume where the argument gets settled. The Lady Shiva training sequence is the best material Bruce gets in the whole crossover, and the final confrontation works because Azrael is not wrong about everything.

Exile is the storyline that sent Superman into space to punish himself, published in the late eighties as the direct set-up for The Death of Superman. Superman executes three Kryptonian criminals and exiles himself over it, which is the only time DC has let him kill and then dealt with the consequences at length. Mignola's issues are the visual standout, and the Mongul material here is what the Warworld stories have been building on ever since.

The second Detective Comics New 52 omnibus covers Gotham's most unstable stretch of the era, with the city cycling through hallucination, corruption and a replacement Batman. Gothtopia is the standout: a Gotham where everyone is happy and Batman is the only one who notices something is wrong. Layman's run is far better regarded now than it was on release, and having the Gordon material here connects Detective to the end of Snyder's Batman run.

Second volume with the central arcs of the Triangle Era experiment: the time when editorial coordination between the four Superman titles was at its creative peak, with weekly crossover sagas and consequences that spanned months. The heart of an entire decade of the character's history, culminating in the run-up to the Death of Superman. Roger Stern, Dan Jurgens, and Louise Simonson write complementary threads that reward reading in publication order. The most ambitious Superman publishing experiment ever attempted.

The second half of Tom King's eighty-five issue Batman run, where the wedding arc collapses and the consequences take over the book. Volume 1 sets up the proposal; this is where King collects on it. Bane's plan turns out to be psychological rather than physical, Batman is taken apart by people who know exactly where the joints are, and the run's argument, that Bruce Wayne is not permitted happiness, is stated outright. The Flash crossover chapters are here in place.

Justice League International was the 1987 relaunch that made the League funny: Batman and Green Lantern stuck with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle and a UN charter. Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Kevin Maguire made a comedy that still takes the threats seriously, and Maguire's facial expressions are the reason the jokes land. The Blue Beetle and Booster Gold friendship created here has outlived every subsequent reboot, which is unusual for anything that started as a punchline.

The Question by Dennis O'Neil & Denys Cowan Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the acclaimed late-1980s reinvention of Vic Sage, the faceless investigative-journalist vigilante who directly inspired Watchmen's Rorschach. After a near-fatal beating by Lady Shiva, Vic is trained by Richard Dragon in martial arts and Zen, turning a rigid crusader into a man who questions his own methods. It's a mature, philosophical crime drama set in corrupt Hub City, praised for O'Neil's literary writing and Cowan's expressionistic art, including issue #17, where Vic reads Watchmen and confronts his own successor.

Wonder Woman by Phil Jimenez Omnibus collects one of Diana's most character-rich modern DC runs in an 856-page oversized hardcover. The volume follows Wonder Woman through Gotham, Washington, Themyscira, family conflict, public responsibility and the wider DC Universe, with Phil Jimenez shaping the book as both writer and defining artist.

Rachel Pollack followed Grant Morrison on Doom Patrol in 1993 and pushed the book somewhere DC had never gone, with a transgender lead and stories about bodies, identity and shame. Pollack was the first openly transgender writer at a major American publisher, and Coagula, a trans woman with powers gained from a sex worker, is the first trans superhero in mainstream comics. The run was largely dismissed at the time and has been reassessed completely since; this is its first collected edition.

Paul Dini wrote Zatanna's 2010 solo series, bringing the character he had written for years in animation into her own book as a working stage magician. Dini writes magic as showmanship, Zatanna performs for paying audiences and the real spells are an occupational hazard, and Stéphane Roux and Cliff Chiang draw it. Bloodspell, the Black Canary team-up graphic novel, is the standout and is otherwise hard to find.

Supergirl: The Silver Age Omnibus Vol. 1 is Kara Zor-El's historical foundation, built around secrecy, adolescence, Kryptonian legacy and the challenge of becoming a hero while living in Superman's shadow. The appeal is not modern decompression but origin texture: Linda Lee, hidden powers, family loss and the gradual construction of Supergirl as her own DC figure. For a character shelf, this is the place where Kara's long publishing identity really begins.
