Garth Ennis wrote the Punisher across two very different series: a black comedy for Marvel Knights and then a crime book with no jokes at all. The Marvel Knights run is Ennis at his funniest — Daredevil, Wolverine and Spider-Man all humiliated in sequence — and the later series is where he drops the comedy entirely. Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe is the notorious one, and it is far bleaker than its reputation suggests.

John Byrne's Spider-Man work spans two very different moments: his early team-up issues in the seventies and Spider-Man: Chapter One, his 1998 attempt to retell the origin. The Team-Up issues are Byrne learning Marvel's house style in public, and the Captain Britain material is his first work with a character he would return to for years. Chapter One is the controversial part — a retcon Marvel abandoned — but it is a genuine artefact of how the character was being handled in the late nineties.

Kieron Gillen's contribution to Krakoa was Immortal X-Men: the Quiet Council seen from the inside, with each issue narrated by a different member trying to justify their vote. Sins of Sinister is the reason to own this: a thousand-year alternate future where Sinister quietly wins, told across three linked series and then undone. Gillen also writes the definitive modern Mister Sinister, and Immortal is where Krakoa's politics stop being background and become the plot.

Peter David returns to the black-suit era with the fun question every symbiote reader asks: what else happened before Peter understood what the costume really was? This omnibus fills that dangerous gap with Mysterio, Hobgoblin, Doctor Strange, Kang, Knull, Hulk, Black Cat trouble and even a 2099 detour for Miguel O'Hara. It is Spider-Man symbiote material with modern pace, old-school continuity hooks and a direct road toward Venom mythology.

The second year on Krakoa, where the nation stops being a promise and starts having institutions, enemies and internal factions willing to use them. Hellions and X-Factor are the reason to own this volume: one follows the mutants Krakoa cannot rehabilitate, the other the team that has to verify every death before a resurrection. Together they are where Hickman's utopia starts showing its costs, which is more interesting than the launch year.

Joss Whedon and John Cassaday took over the X-Men in 2004 with a deliberately old-fashioned brief: put the team back in costumes and make them superheroes again. Gifted introduces a mutant cure and asks whether anyone has the right to refuse it, which is the cleanest version of the X-Men's central question anyone has written. Cassaday draws it with unusual stillness, and Kitty Pryde gets the best material of her career. It is the standard recommendation for a reader's first X-Men book.

David Michelinie and Mark Bagley ran Amazing Spider-Man through the early nineties, the years when Venom became a franchise and Carnage arrived. Maximum Carnage's opening chapters are here, along with Lethal Protector, the miniseries that turned Venom from villain to antihero and sold on that alone. Bagley's Spider-Man is the version a generation grew up with, and this is the run at its commercial peak.

The event omnibus that closes Peter Parker's Ultimate Spider-Man story and sets up the arrival of Miles Morales. Brian Michael Bendis pushes the long-running Ultimate saga into its final confrontation, then follows the shock through Ultimate Fallout. A key companion to the Ultimate Spider-Man omnibus line.

Daredevil by Ed Brubaker Omnibus Vol. 2 is the consequence volume: Lady Bullseye, the Hand, Kingpin fallout and Matt's gradual slide toward choices that feel less heroic and more desperate. It closes the Bendis-Brubaker era with the discipline of a crime novel, where every decision comes due. The value is the second half of Brubaker's noir machinery: Matt Murdock under pressure from crime, law, prison fallout and enemies who understand his weak points.

Wonder Woman by George Pérez Omnibus Vol. 1 focuses on George Pérez's relaunch of Diana, with Wonder Woman shaped by myth rebuilt, Amazon history restored and a heroine written through diplomacy, strength and compassion. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Avengers vs. X-Men Omnibus — the Phoenix Force returns to Earth and splits the Marvel universe. Captain America vs. Cyclops, the Phoenix Five transform the world, Hope Summers as the chosen one. The event that changed everything. Avengers vs. X-Men #0-12 plus AVX: VS #1-6 and AvX Consequences #1-5 collected in the complete omnibus. The Phoenix Force returns to Earth targeting Hope Summers — Captain America demands she be handed over, Cyclops refuses. David Michelinie and Erik Larsen's Amazing Spider-Man is where Venom stopped being a one-off and became the character who could carry a book by himself. Issue #332 is the run's centre: Venom back with a plan, and Larsen drawing him as something that does not obey anatomy. The volume also contains the Cosmic Spider-Man arc, in which Peter briefly gets unlimited power and the book has to work out what to do with a Spider-Man who cannot lose.

Chip Zdarsky's Spider-Man work is spread across Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Life Story, and it is built on the relationships rather than the villains. Zdarsky writes Spider-Man as a person with friends, which sounds obvious and almost nobody does. The Jameson issue in particular is one of the best single Spider-Man comics of the last decade, and the Osborn world arc lets him show what the character actually prevents.

Superior Spider-Man was the year Doctor Octopus took over Peter Parker's body and tried to be a better Spider-Man than Peter, largely succeeding. This omnibus collects everything around the main series. The tie-ins are where the premise gets tested by people who knew Peter: the Avengers running diagnostics, Daredevil noticing something is wrong, the X-Men reacting to a Spider-Man who is willing to kill. Reading them alongside the main run is what makes Otto's deception feel precarious rather than comfortable.

Peter David wrote the Hulk for twelve years, longer than any other writer, and this first omnibus is where he starts turning a monster comic into a book about dissociation. David's first move is to bring back the grey Hulk as a Las Vegas enforcer with Banner's cunning and none of his restraint, which is the version most readers had never seen. This volume also contains his complete early collaboration with Todd McFarlane, drawn right before McFarlane went to Spider-Man.

Deadpool & Co. collects the mercenary's team-up stories — the one-off and short-run collaborations with other Marvel characters that showcase the creative comedy potential in placing Deadpool against established heroes and villains with wildly different tones.

The Clone Saga ran for two years across four monthly titles and is the most notorious storyline in Spider-Man's history: the reveal that Peter Parker might be the clone. Volume 2 is where the story commits: Maximum Clonage, the Jackal's plan at full scale, and the point at which Marvel had to decide whether to keep Ben Reilly as Spider-Man. Read as a whole it is far more coherent than its reputation, and reading it in one volume is the only way to see the structure the monthly schedule buried.

PRH presents this as Bendis telling the story of the X-Men as fugitives on the run. It is the companion shelf to All-New X-Men, focused on Cyclops' side of the post-AVX mutant fracture. This is the Cyclops-side shelf of the Bendis era: more fugitive, political and unstable than All-New X-Men, with the school-and-revolution split driving the tension.

Daredevil launched in 1964 as Marvel's take on a blind superhero, created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, with Wally Wood arriving early to give him the red costume he still wears. The early issues are lighter than the character's reputation suggests — closer to Spider-Man than to noir — and that contrast is the interest: this is the book Frank Miller would later invert completely. Wally Wood's costume redesign in #7 is one of the most durable design decisions in comics.

Brian Michael Bendis's Miles Morales omnibus collects the complete Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man run that redefined what Spider-Man could mean for a new generation of readers. Miles Morales — half-Black, half-Latino teenager from Brooklyn — takes up the mantle after Peter Parker's death, navigating a world that expects him to fail while discovering the full weight of being a symbol. The series broke sales records and sparked the mainstream conversation about representation in superhero comics that continues to this day.

Reign of X is the third year on Krakoa, when the nation's institutions are established and the stories move from founding to governing. S.W.O.R.D. is the arrival worth the price: Al Ewing turns Abigail Brand's agency into Krakoa's space programme and starts building the Arakko material that dominates the rest of the era. The Juggernaut miniseries is also here, and it is a genuinely good redemption story that nobody expected.

Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Vol. 5 continues Peter Parker's Bronze Age stretch after the first Clone Saga, with Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas and Ross Andru shaping a Spider-Man who feels older, more socially rooted and increasingly defined by relationships. Mary Jane, Aunt May, the Daily Bugle and a changing Marvel New York give the run its texture.

Batman: Detective Comics: The New 52 Omnibus Vol. 1 starts the New 52 Detective Comics era with a sharper, more violent Gotham and a Batman pushed through crime, spectacle and body-horror shocks. Tony Daniel and James Tynion IV make the book feel immediate, glossy and aggressive in a way that matches the relaunch mood.
