The second Silver Age volume continues Batman's most experimental decade, with the character appearing in stories that would be unthinkable ten years later in either direction. The crossover material is what makes this volume more than a completist purchase: Batman appearing in Lois Lane's book and in Adventure Comics shows how DC used him as a guest star before shared universes were formalised. It stops at Detective Comics #281, in 1960, four years before the New Look would strip all of this out.

The run ends with him arrested and imprisoned, which is one of the few genuinely unresolved endings in mainstream superhero comics. The What If? issue about Karen Page is unexpectedly the most affecting thing in the book.

These stories, meticulously restored, capture the character right before her creator's death reshaped the title.

Marc Guggenheim (showrunner of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow) brings his sense of TV pacing to the comic: each issue with its emotional arc, each arc with its climax, and the whole working as a serialised season. Focus on individual characters and the ethical dilemmas that define mutants. Good gateway to the modern format.

Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason wrote Batman and Robin for the whole New 52 era, and their subject was simple: a father and a son who do not know how to talk to each other. This is the run where Damian Wayne dies and where his death actually lands, because Tomasi had spent thirty issues making the relationship work first. Requiem, the near-silent issue that follows, is one of the best single Batman comics of the decade. Gleason draws Damian better than anyone before or since.

Christopher Priest wrote Deathstroke for fifty issues, treating Slade Wilson as a case study in how a man justifies being a contract killer to his own family. Priest structures it the way he structured Black Panther, out of sequence, with the reader always a step behind, and the subject is family rather than mercenary work. Slade's children are the real cast, and the run's best issues are arguments rather than fights. It is one of the strongest DC runs of its decade.

The second Daredevil omnibus covers the late sixties and early seventies, when Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway took over and the book moved Matt Murdock to San Francisco. This is the run where the Black Widow becomes a co-lead — the book was retitled Daredevil and the Black Widow for part of it — and where the character stops being a Spider-Man variant. The Iron Man crossover is also the first appearance of the Zodiac cartel, which Marvel used for decades afterwards.

X-Factor: The Original X-Men Omnibus Vol. 2 drives the reunited team into Inferno-era chaos, with Madelyne Pryor, Nathan, Mister Sinister and the X-Men reunion turning family drama into mutant crisis.
