About the character

More from Alpha Flight

Alpha Flight is Canada's official superhero team. Created by John Byrne in Uncanny X-Men, it has one of Marvel's best-loved first runs of its own.

Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus

Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus

John Byrne created Alpha Flight as a one-off obstacle for the X-Men in 1979 and then spent twenty-eight issues arguing, largely with himself, that Canada's superteam deserved its own book. Including X-Men #120-121 is the point: that is the team's first appearance, drawn by Byrne at the height of his Uncanny run. The series itself is stranger than its reputation — issue #12 kills the lead, #6 is almost silent — and Byrne uses the format to write about a country rather than a city.

Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1

Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1

The first time Rom the Spaceknight's Marvel run has been collected in one book. Bill Mantlo turned a Parker Brothers electronic toy into a genuine Marvel Universe saga, threading the Dire Wraiths through S.H.I.E.L.D., the X-Men and Doctor Strange, while Sal Buscema drew the entire run. It gathers the origin and Rom's arrival on Earth across his first twenty-nine issues, a Bronze Age cult classic locked out of print for decades by licensing disputes.

Description

Background. Alpha Flight began as John Byrne’s Canadian team. Bill Mantlo took the title over in 1985 and pushed it somewhere stranger and harsher, and partway through his run a young Jim Lee arrived for his first ongoing assignment at Marvel.

What’s inside. Collects Alpha Flight (1983) #30–70, Alpha Flight Annual (1986) #1–2, Avengers (1963) #272 and Marvel Fanfare (1982) #28 — 1,192 pages, gathered here for the first time.

Why it’s worth it. This is the stretch where Alpha Flight stopped being a Byrne spin-off and became its own book, and it is the only place to read Mantlo’s full run in one volume. For Jim Lee readers it is the beginning: the earliest professional pages of the artist who would go on to define nineties Marvel and then run DC.

Edition details. Oversized hardcover omnibus, 1,192 pages. US edition published by Marvel Comics. ISBN 9781302965389.
