Alpha Flight began as a supporting team in Uncanny X-Men and went on to get its own series thanks to John Byrne. As Canada’s official representatives, the team features such unique characters as Sasquatch, Northstar, Aurora, Snowbird and Puck. One of the most original series of the 1980s from Marvel.

John Byrne created Alpha Flight as a one-off obstacle for the X-Men in 1979 and then spent twenty-eight issues arguing, largely with himself, that Canada's superteam deserved its own book. Including X-Men #120-121 is the point: that is the team's first appearance, drawn by Byrne at the height of his Uncanny run. The series itself is stranger than its reputation — issue #12 kills the lead, #6 is almost silent — and Byrne uses the format to write about a country rather than a city.
