John Byrne created Alpha Flight as a one-off obstacle for the X-Men in 1979 and then spent twenty-eight issues arguing, largely with himself, that Canada's superteam deserved its own book. The series itself is stranger than its reputation — issue #12 kills the lead, #6 is almost silent — and Byrne uses the format to write about a country rather than a city.
