What actually matters when buying an omnibus
An omnibus is not a paperback: 1,000+ pages, oversized, 2-3 kg. In transit it fails in very predictable ways: corner dings, spine crush and dust jacket tears. Three factors make the difference:
- Packaging engineered for the format. Rigid box, corner protection, the book immobilised — not just bubble wrap.
- Stock physically in Europe. EU stock = no customs, no import VAT surprise, 3-9 days transit. US stock = 2-6 weeks and your country's import process.
- Condition culture of the seller. A collector-run shop checks every copy before shipping; a warehouse doesn't.

Amazon (EU sites). Wide availability on common titles. The complaint collectors repeat most often: generic packaging. Oversized books regularly arrive with dinged corners. Acceptable for reading copies; risky for collection-grade.
Before you order: four things to check
Once you have decided on the American edition, the shop matters more than the price. An omnibus weighs between 1.5 and 4.3 kilos and fails in transit in very specific ways: bumped corners, crushed spine, torn dust jacket. Four questions separate a good order from a bad one.
Where does the stock physically sit? Stock already inside the European Union arrives with nothing to pay on delivery: no customs, no import VAT, no clearance fee. Stock in the United States means all three, plus a two-to-six week wait and an ocean crossing for a three-kilo hardcover. What does shipping actually cost, and is there a minimum? Free shipping above a threshold is not free shipping if you are buying one book, so ask for the figure on a single volume to your country. The question that separates shops is whether there is a minimum at all: pickup-point delivery from EU stock can be free with no minimum order, in ten European countries.
How is it packed? Not "carefully" — ask for the specification. A rigid box cut to the book, corner protection and the volume immobilised so it cannot shift. A padded envelope for a three-kilo hardcover is how corners get bumped, and it is still common.
Is the copy checked before it ships? Publisher cartons are not perfect. A shop that inspects each copy catches the dented one before you do. A warehouse does not.
The European publishing map, in one place
Before comparing prices it helps to know who publishes what, because it is not the same everywhere and almost nobody writes it down. Panini holds both Marvel and DC in Spain (since April 2025, after ECC Ediciones was wound up), Germany (DC since 2001) and Italy (DC since 2020). France is the exception: DC belongs to Urban Comics, part of Dargaud, and has since 2011.
Beyond those four the map fragments. DC is with Egmont in Poland — where Marvel is not Panini either — Devir in Portugal and Dark Dragon Books in the Netherlands, which holds Marvel there too. Belgium has no licensee of its own and follows the French or Dutch market depending on the language you read.
What the same book actually costs
Cover prices on US omnibus are set in dollars and rarely reflect what you pay in Europe. The useful comparison is the delivered price of one specific volume, and it is the number most guides avoid printing.

Prices are set from the US cover price and sit below it on the current catalogue, and they follow a fixed ladder rather than a rotating offer: every title with the same cover price costs the same here, whatever the character or the year. Open two product pages and you will see it. Add free pickup-point delivery with no minimum order and the shelf price is the landed price.
Compare that against a US import of the same book: the dollar price looks lower until you add international shipping, import VAT, the flat customs charge and the carrier's clearance fee, none of which appear on the listing.
