Collecting Omnibus in Belgium: Two Markets, One Country

Belgium is one of the two European markets where the answer to this question depends on which language you read in. Switzerland is the other, with three language regions. In Belgium the split is between the French market and the Dutch-language market, and the two are in very different shapes.

Two markets in one country

If you read in French, you are served by the French market: Panini publishes Marvel, including its Marvel Omnibus line and its chronological Integrales, while DC belongs to Urban Comics, part of Dargaud. Two publishers, several formats, and a genuine choice to make.

If you read in Dutch, you are served by the Dutch-language market, where Dark Dragon Books has held the Marvel licence since 2018 and the DC licence since 2021. Its programme is built around self-contained stories and miniseries rather than long ongoing runs, and there is no Dutch-language omnibus line.

So a French-speaking Belgian collector has format options a Flemish one simply does not. Same country, same shops, different answer.

If you read in Dutch

The decision is made for you. The omnibus format only exists in English, so the question is not which language to collect in but where to buy from. Choose a shop with stock inside the EU and you avoid import VAT and courier handling fees entirely.

If you read in French

You have a real choice, and it is worth making deliberately. Reading in your own language is a genuine comfort over a thousand pages, and for a run that is fully published and in print in French, that comfort may be all you need.

The American edition wins on three things. It arrives first, because everything else is translated from it. It covers far more of the catalogue, including runs never published in French. And its sold-out volumes are far more likely to return as new printings, because the line serves a very large market.

There is also a format point specific to French. Panini publishes both Marvel Omnibus and Intégrales, and only part of the catalogue goes into the omnibus line, while DC sits with a different publisher entirely. Building a collection that stays in one format is harder than it looks.

What both halves share

Belgium is inside the European Union, so buying from a shop with EU stock means no customs charges and no import VAT surprise on arrival. That is true whichever language you collect in, and it is the single most useful thing to check before ordering a heavy hardcover.
