Marvel vs DC: what the catalogue looks like
Across the 549 omnibus editions we currently track for the European market, Marvel accounts for 62% of the catalogue (342 editions) and DC for 38% (207 editions). Marvel's lead reflects a longer, denser omnibus programme; DC's line has grown fast in recent years but from a smaller base.
What an omnibus costs in Europe
The average cover price is 88.64 euros, but the distribution matters more than the average. Under 60 euros there are 28 titles; between 60 and 90 euros, 183 titles; between 90 and 120 euros, 332 titles, which is the heart of the market at 60%; and above 120 euros, only 6 of the largest oversized collections. In practice a European collector should budget around 90 to 120 euros for a standard omnibus, with shipping on top unless a free threshold applies.
The most-collected characters
Ranked by number of distinct omnibus editions available: X-Men (58), Batman (55), Spider-Man (53), Superman (25), Avengers (21), Robin (21), Wolverine (20), Justice League (18), Daredevil (18) and The Flash (16). The top three alone account for a large share of demand, a useful signal for anyone deciding what to collect or resell.
Scarcity: why omnibus sell out
The single most important fact about this market: at any given moment only about 9% of omnibus editions are in stock across the catalogue. Omnibus are printed in limited runs. Once a run sells through, a title goes out of print and moves to the secondary market, where out-of-print omnibus routinely list above their original cover price on marketplaces such as eBay and AbeBooks. The practical consequence is that the reprint you are waiting for may never come, and the out-of-print copy only gets more expensive, which is why in-print availability is itself a buying signal.
Import from the US vs buying in the EU
US retailers often show lower sticker prices, but for a European buyer the real landed cost includes international shipping, customs duty and import VAT, plus the risk of damage on long transit. Buying within the EU avoids customs handling entirely and ships from inside the single market.
