Ultimate X-Men Omnibus Vol. 4

Read in sequence these are not four books but one: Harvey Dent's fall, the aftermath that creates a new Robin, and Selina Kyle's search for a father, all told in the same seasonal structure. It is also the single most direct comics source for Nolan's trilogy, which the Nolan and Goyer conversation makes explicit.

Hush was the 2002 storyline that put Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee on Batman together, and it remains one of the best-selling Batman books ever published. Before The Long Halloween, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale produced three Halloween specials for Legends of the Dark Knight between 1993 and 1995. They are where the pair worked out the seasonal structure and noir framing that would define their later work together. Haunted Knight is short, and that is its strength: three complete stories that show Loeb and Sale finding their voice in real time. Read before The Long Halloween it supplies context; read after it works as a set of character studies about fear and obligation. For collectors of the Loeb/Sale run, it is the missing first volume.

Superman: Our Worlds at War Omnibus Vol. 1 throws Superman and the wider DC universe into a conflict big enough to feel like a real planetary crisis. Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke and the Superman line use cosmic scale to test Clark's role as protector when the threat is not just a villain, but war itself.

Superman: Emperor Joker The Deluxe Edition collects the storyline in which the Joker steals Mister Mxyzptlk's reality-warping power and remakes the universe as a joke at Superman's expense. It is the rare Superman story where the threat is genuinely unanswerable, and it is very funny until it is not.
