The Joker: The Bronze Age Omnibus

The Killing Joke was published in 1988 as a one-shot in which the Joker sets out to prove that one bad day is all it takes to break anyone. Bolland finishes his own art and the control is the point: the Joker is terrifying because the drawing never flinches. The recolouring is genuinely different from the 1988 version, flatter, colder, with the flashbacks in near-monochrome, and it is the reason this edition exists. It remains the most cited Joker story ever published.

In 1966 Batman was a prime-time television phenomenon: Adam West and Burt Ward, painted sound effects and a rogues' gallery played by Hollywood guest stars. DC brought that universe back as an ongoing comic. The Man Who Laughs is Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke's account of Batman's first encounter with the Joker, written as a direct continuation of Frank Miller's Year One. Brubaker writes the Joker as a public health emergency rather than a nemesis, poisoned reservoirs, televised threats, a city that does not yet know what it is dealing with, and Mahnke draws the victims' faces, which is the detail everyone remembers. Made of Wood is the other draw: a genuine detective story with the Golden Age Green Lantern.

Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo wrote Joker in 2008 as a crime novel: the Joker released from Arkham, reclaiming his territory, seen entirely from the point of view of a low-level henchman. Narrating from a henchman's perspective is what makes it work: the reader is as frightened as he is, and the Joker is never explained. Bermejo paints him without theatricality, scarred, physical, wearing a cheap suit, and the result is closer to Scorsese than to a superhero comic. Batman appears for four pages and it is enough.

The Joker: 80 Years of the Clown Prince of Crime collects eight decades of the character in one volume, from his first appearance in 1940 through the Silver Age camp, the Bronze Age return to menace and the modern era. An anthology rather than a run.

The third Bronze Age omnibus covers the late seventies, when Gerry Conway took over the Justice League and gave it the longest continuous run of its classic era. Conway wrote the League for years and used the length: long-running subplots, a rotating roster and the arrival of Zatanna as a permanent member. The JLA/JSA crossovers in this stretch are also the most ambitious of the run, bringing in the Legion of Super-Heroes and the New Gods across multiple Earths. The fourth Bronze Age omnibus takes the Justice League into the early eighties, the last years before Crisis on Infinite Earths changed everything. The Leaf Candy mini comic is a genuine curiosity, a promotional giveaway that has never been collected anywhere else. The main run includes the New Gods crossover in #183-185, which is Gerry Conway writing Darkseid at full scale, and the Firestorm and Titans tie-ins that show DC's line starting to interconnect.

Aquaman: The Death of a Prince Deluxe Edition collects the 1970s run in which Black Manta murders Aquaman's infant son and the character never fully recovers. It is the darkest thing DC published about Arthur Curry for decades, drawn largely by Jim Aparo, and it is the origin of the grief that every later writer — Peter David, Geoff Johns, Jeff Parker — has had to work around.

Swamp Thing: Dark Genesis Omnibus collects the original Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson run that created the character, plus the material that followed before Alan Moore arrived. Wrightson's swamp is one of the most beautiful things ever drawn in a mainstream comic.
