Don McGregor's 'Panther's Prey' is one of the most ambitious Black Panther stories ever written — a four-issue prestige-format miniseries published in 1990–1991 that reunites McGregor with his Wakanda. The story pits T'Challa against the drug lord Hardcase and his Crew in a tale that weaves street-level crime with Wakandan politics, exploring what it means to be a Black king in a world shaped by systemic inequality.

DC One Million Omnibus collects Grant Morrison's crossover in which the Justice League of the 853rd century invites the present-day heroes to the future, and every DC title that month jumped a million issues ahead. It is Morrison at their most gleefully inventive: a Superman living inside the sun, a Batman descended from Bruce Wayne's line, and Vandal Savage still alive and still furious.

Identity Crisis 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition collects Brad Meltzer and Rags Morales' murder mystery, in which the wife of a second-string Justice Leaguer is killed and the investigation exposes something the League did years ago and agreed never to discuss. It is the book that made DC's heroes capable of real moral failure, and it remains one of the most argued-about comics of the century.

John Byrne relaunched Doom Patrol in 2004 with a full reboot, wiping the continuity Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollack had built and starting from the original team. The JLA issues are where Byrne reintroduces the team, and the reboot itself is a genuine curiosity: DC let a creator delete two celebrated runs and then quietly restored them a few years later. Byrne's version plays the concept straight as science fiction, which is the version the character had before 1989.

Supergirl by Peter David Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the run that turned Supergirl into something genuinely strange: a shapeshifting protoplasmic being merged with a troubled human girl, forced to share one body and one conscience. Peter David wrote it for eighty issues and it is unlike any other Supergirl.

John Byrne created Alpha Flight as a one-off obstacle for the X-Men in 1979 and then spent twenty-eight issues arguing, largely with himself, that Canada's superteam deserved its own book. Including X-Men #120-121 is the point: that is the team's first appearance, drawn by Byrne at the height of his Uncanny run. The series itself is stranger than its reputation — issue #12 kills the lead, #6 is almost silent — and Byrne uses the format to write about a country rather than a city.

Batwoman by J.H. Williams III and W. Haden Blackman is the most visually ambitious book DC has published this century. Williams draws each sequence in a different style depending on whether Kate Kane is in or out of costume, and builds page layouts shaped like bat symbols that still read correctly. Kate is also DC's most prominent lesbian lead, and the run treats her military discharge under Don't Ask, Don't Tell as central rather than background.

The Trial of Captain America — Ed Brubaker's penultimate omnibus arc, placing Bucky Barnes in the dock for his crimes as the Winter Soldier. This omnibus collects one of the most legally and morally complex stories in Brubaker's run: can a man be judged for acts committed while brainwashed? The courtroom drama is backed by relentless action as the Sin — Red Skull's daughter — wages war on America, building toward a conclusion that fundamentally reshapes Bucky's fate. Brubaker at his most sophisticated.

Green Lantern/Green Arrow: Hard Traveling Heroes Omnibus collects the run that brought politics into mainstream superhero comics. Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams sent a cosmic policeman and a left-wing millionaire across America to argue about racism, poverty and addiction, and comics were never quite the same afterwards.

The Green Lantern by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp Omnibus collects the run that treated the Corps as an interstellar police procedural: Hal Jordan works cases across the galaxy, each issue a self-contained piece of cosmic weirdness, drawn by Liam Sharp in dense painted detail.

The first murder in five hundred years, twenty billion suspects and one rookie Green Lantern a long way from home. N. K. Jemisin brings her science fiction to the City Enduring, a place that solved violence by chemically removing everyone's emotions, and asks what happens the day that stops working.

Teen Titans by Geoff Johns Omnibus collects the complete run that rebuilt the team for a new generation: Superboy, Robin, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl joined by Cyborg, Starfire and Beast Boy as reluctant mentors. Johns writes teenagers who are genuinely afraid of becoming their predecessors, and the run contains 'The Future Is Now', still one of the best-loved Titans stories.

The conclusion of Nick Spencer's Captain America — Secret Empire and its aftermath, collected in the second omnibus of the most politically charged Cap run of the modern era. Secret Empire sees HYDRA Cap seize control of the United States, forcing every Marvel hero to confront what Captain America means when the man inside the suit represents everything the symbol is supposed to oppose. Spencer's conclusion is as controversial as his beginning, but the scale and ambition of the storytelling are undeniable.

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are one of the defining creative partnerships of modern Marvel comics, celebrated for their run on Daredevil. When they reunited to tackle Black Widow, they brought the same kinetic confidence — and then extended their collaboration to Captain America, creating a cohesive spy-action epic across two iconic characters.

The Silver Surfer got his own title in 1968 after Stan Lee decided the character Kirby had created as a Galactus herald deserved to carry a book alone. John Buscema drew most of it, and the series is unusually philosophical for its era: the Surfer is trapped on Earth, observes humanity constantly and finds it disappointing. Issue #4, with the Surfer against Thor and Loki, is one of the most sought-after Silver Age comics purely for Buscema's art.

Tomb of Dracula ran for seventy issues in the seventies, after the Comics Code was relaxed to allow vampires, and is the best horror comic Marvel has ever published. Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan stayed on the book for its entire run, which almost never happened at Marvel, and the result is a genuine serial: Dracula as the protagonist, a cast of hunters who lose regularly, and Blade's first appearance in #10. Colan's shadows are the reason the book still looks unlike anything else.

Black Panther was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966, the first Black superhero in mainstream American comics. The Fantastic Four debut is the historically important part — T'Challa introduced not as a sidekick but as a head of state who defeats the FF to test them. The Avengers years then keep him in the main line for a decade, which is why he was available when Don McGregor and Christopher Priest later built him a mythology.

After Jack Kirby's original Eternals series ended, Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald took on the challenge of integrating the Eternals into the broader Marvel Universe — a complex task given how self-contained Kirby's vision was. The result is a fascinating chapter in Marvel cosmic history that bridges the gap between Kirby mythology and mainstream continuity. It represents the full arc of the post-Kirby Eternals era. Why it's worth reading.

The Justice League of America launched in 1960 and effectively created the superhero team book as a format, gathering DC's biggest characters into one title every month. Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky wrote and drew these as puzzle stories: a threat splits the League into pairs, each pair solves part of it, and they reconvene for the finish. The structure is formulaic and completely satisfying. It is also the book that convinced Marvel to launch the Fantastic Four, which makes it foundational twice over.

Harley Quinn & the Gotham City Sirens Omnibus collects the complete Gotham City Sirens run, putting Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy at the centre of their own Gotham team book. Across Gotham City Sirens #1-26 and Catwoman #83, the volume follows a trio built on friendship, secrets and bad decisions rather than another Batman-led storyline.

Dazzler was created in 1980 as a joint venture between Marvel and Casablanca Records: a mutant disco singer designed to cross over into music. The label deal collapsed, and the character survived anyway. X-Men #130 is her first appearance and one of the more sought-after issues of the Claremont run. The series itself is a genuine oddity — a superhero book about a working musician, with a direct-market experiment behind it — and this is the only place the whole forty-two issue run is collected.

Rainbow Rowell's She-Hulk launched in 2022 as a deliberate course correction — a series focused on Jennifer Walters as a person rather than a legal concept or comedy premise. Coming after years of continuity upheaval, it returns She-Hulk to basics: her relationships, her identity struggles between human and Hulk, and her emotional life. Collects She-Hulk #1–15 (). The series follows Jen attempting to rebuild her life while wrestling with the division between her two identities.

The Death of Captain America is the storyline Ed Brubaker wrote immediately after Civil War, in which Steve Rogers is shot on the courthouse steps and stays dead for two years. The interesting part is that Brubaker barely writes Steve: the run is about Bucky Barnes taking the shield, Sharon Carter's role in the assassination, and the Red Skull operating through other people's bodies. It is the rare superhero death that Marvel used properly, and Bucky's tenure as Captain America starts here.
