Fantastic Four #1 launched in November 1961 as the founding text of the Marvel Age — Jack Kirby's design genius combined with Stan Lee's character-driven dialogue to create something that looked like a superhero comic but functioned as something more: a soap opera about a dysfunctional family who also happened to have superpowers. The book introduced the Mole Man, the Skrulls, the Impossible Man, and the Sub-Mariner's return in its first year alone.
