Description
Background. The concluding period of Byrne's Fantastic Four run brought several of his longer narrative threads to resolution. Sue Storm's transformation from Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman — a name change driven by her greater agency and emotional complexity in Byrne's writing — was one of the era's most significant character developments. The Secret Wars tie-in material, the Thing's return, and the escalating Doom conflict all converged in a run conclusion that earned genuine emotional weight through years of careful setup.
What's inside. This second Byrne FF omnibus collects the conclusion of his run, including Sue Storm's character evolution and name change to Invisible Woman, Doctor Doom's expanded role as primary antagonist, the Secret Wars and Thing's departure material, the Beyonder crossover, Wyatt Wingfoot's prominent role, and Byrne's final issues through his departure from the book. The collection documents the complete second half of what many consider the major post-Kirby Fantastic Four era.
Why it's worth it. The Sue Storm/Invisible Woman evolution is one of the most significant character arcs in Fantastic Four history — Byrne took a character who had been the team's most underutilized member and transformed her into its most emotionally complex figure. The Doctor Doom material in this period is the best single-run Doom characterization in FF history. Non-negotiable for completists of either the Byrne run or the Fantastic Four mythology.
