Final Crisis Omnibus

Final Crisis is Grant Morrison's 2008 event, in which Darkseid wins on page one and the rest of the story is about what happens to a universe after evil has already taken it. Morrison writes it as a deconstruction of superhero comics themselves: the Anti-Life Equation spreads as a meme, reality degrades into fragments, and the narrative structure breaks down with it. It is DC's most formally difficult event and its most rewarding on a reread, and Batman R.I.P. runs directly into it.

The Man Who Laughs is Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke's account of Batman's first encounter with the Joker, written as a direct continuation of Frank Miller's Year One. Brubaker writes the Joker as a public health emergency rather than a nemesis, poisoned reservoirs, televised threats, a city that does not yet know what it is dealing with, and Mahnke draws the victims' faces, which is the detail everyone remembers. Made of Wood is the other draw: a genuine detective story with the Golden Age Green Lantern.

Under the Red Hood undid the most permanent death in Batman’s history. Judd Winick brought Jason Todd back not as a redemption story but as an indictment, and the arc has shaped every Batman and Robin story written since. Winick refuses to let Batman answer that question comfortably, and the book is stronger for it. At 544 pages this is the complete storyline rather than the abridged version, including Annual #25’s explanation of the resurrection, and it reads as the direct sequel to A Death in the Family.

Peter J. Tomasi wrote Detective Comics through the late 2010s, focusing on the detective side of the character and on the people Batman puts at risk by knowing them. The opening case is a murder at the Gotham Aquarium staged to recreate the Waynes' killing, down to the playbill and the pearls, and the run keeps that register: someone hunting the people closest to Batman, and Batman unable to work out who without exposing them further. Mahnke's Gotham is genuinely unpleasant to look at, which is the correct choice here.
