Mike Grell

Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters Saga, collected complete as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Mike Grell strips Green Arrow down to crime fiction, politics and consequence. Oliver Queen becomes less of a bright superhero archer and more of a man choosing violence in a city that gives him no clean options. This first Longbow Hunters Saga omnibus is the start of the grounded Green Arrow shelf: adult, tense and built around moral discomfort. Mike Grell’s Green Arrow keeps Oliver Queen close to the ground: crime, politics, aging, violence and moral choices that do not arrive with clean superhero answers. This second Longbow Hunters Saga omnibus continues the street-level world where arrows hurt, consequences stay, and Seattle feels more like a living city than a stage.

The Warlord by Mike Grell, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. The Warlord by Mike Grell Omnibus Vol. 1 collects the sword-and-sorcery series Grell wrote and drew about a US Air Force pilot who falls through a polar opening into Skartaris, a hollow-earth world of dinosaurs and warring city-states. It was DC's answer to Conan and outlasted most of its imitators. This second omnibus completes Mike Grell's Warlord in one volume, gathering the back half of his defining run on the sword-and-sorcery series in original colors, with a new introduction by Grell and an afterword by Dan Jurgens. Travis Morgan fights to hold Skartaris together as Grell shares scripting with Sharon Wright and hands art duties to Mark Texeira and a young Dan Jurgens. Warlord stands as one of DC's foundational fantasy titles, and this edition closes the definitive collection of Grell's original work.

The Longbow Hunters is the 1987 miniseries that took Green Arrow away from the Justice League, gave him Seattle and made him a grown man with a body count. Grell removed the trick arrows, the superheroics and most of the costume, and wrote a crime series about a middle-aged archer. It is one of the few DC characters permanently changed by a single miniseries, and the run that followed is far darker than the Green Arrow most readers know from television.

The second Longbow Hunters omnibus completes Mike Grell's Green Arrow, taking Oliver Queen through the back half of a run that never returned him to superheroics. The Wonder Year is the retold origin, written after eighty issues of establishing who the character had become, and it is far better than most retrospective origins. Shado: Song of the Dragon gives the run's most important supporting character her own book, which is otherwise almost impossible to find.
