Patrick Gleason wrote and drew Robin: Son of Batman after years drawing Damian Wayne in Batman and Robin, giving him a solo book about atonement. The premise is the Year of Blood: Damian retracing the atrocities the League of Assassins made him commit as a child and undoing each one. Gleason knows the character better than anyone, and having him on script and art gives the book a coherence solo Robin series rarely achieve.

War Games was DC's answer to a simple question: what happens if every gang in Gotham loses its leader on the same night. The answer is a citywide gang war that Batman started by accident. This is the crossover that kills Stephanie Brown, ends Batman's working relationship with the Gotham police and leaves the Bat-family fractured for years. Jean-Paul Valley's new Batman keeps escalating, while Robin and Nightwing help watch the damage caused by a symbol losing its moral centre.

Knightsend is the third act of Knightfall: Bruce Wayne has recovered, Jean-Paul Valley is still wearing the cowl, and he has no intention of giving it back. Knightfall broke Batman and KnightQuest showed the replacement failing; this is the volume where the argument gets settled. The Lady Shiva training sequence is the best material Bruce gets in the whole crossover, and the final confrontation works because Azrael is not wrong about everything.
