About this omnibus

Late-period Kirby with nobody editing him: a giant red tyrannosaur and a proto-human boy, told with total conviction and no irony whatsoever. Short, strange, and the purest example of what Kirby did when left alone with an idea.

More from Jack Kirby

Jack Kirby, the King of Comics, co-created much of the Marvel Universe and, on his own, built entire mythologies like the Eternals and the Fourth World.

DC Universe: The Bronze Age Omnibus by Jack Kirby

DC Universe: The Bronze Age Omnibus by Jack Kirby

Everything Kirby made at DC in the 1970s that was not the Fourth World, in one volume: Kamandi, OMAC, the Demon, Sandman, Kobra and the war stories. He was writing, drawing and editing all of it at once, at an age when most creators are repeating themselves.

Fourth World by Jack Kirby Omnibus

The work Kirby left Marvel to make. Four interlocking series about warring gods, free will and tyranny, built as a single story with a beginning and an end, and the book that brought Darkseid into the DC universe.

Eternals Omnibus

Eternals Omnibus

Jack Kirby created the Eternals in 1976, after returning from DC, as a bid to explain human mythology as the memory of alien visitors. Kirby wrote and drew the whole run and it was cancelled before he could finish. The Celestials — building-sized judges who arrive every few thousand years to decide whether humanity survives — are the enduring idea, and Marvel has used them ever since. It is Kirby's last great creation and it reads unlike anything else he did.

Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 2

Fourth World Omnibus Vol. 2

Kirby left the Fourth World unfinished when DC cancelled it, and for twenty years other people tried to end it for him. This second omnibus collects what came after: the returns, the continuations and the eventual conclusion of the New Gods, from the 1970s through to the writers who inherited Apokolips.

Description

Background. Returning to Marvel in the late 1970s, Jack Kirby was given titles he could write and draw himself. Devil Dinosaur is the strangest of them: a prehistoric adventure series about a red tyrannosaur and his companion Moon-Boy, played completely straight.

What's inside. Collects Devil Dinosaur #1-9, the complete series, with the letters pages reprinted in full.

Why it's worth it. It is the shortest book on the Kirby shelf and the one that shows him unmediated: no co-writer smoothing the dialogue, no editorial committee. If you want to understand why people describe Kirby as a force of nature rather than a craftsman, this is the concentrated dose.
