Background. In 1996 DC and Marvel published a crossover in which readers voted on who won each fight. Then they did something stranger: for one month both companies published comics from a merged universe, complete with fake back-issue histories for characters that had existed for four weeks.

What's inside. Collects DC Versus Marvel/Marvel Versus DC #1-4, all twelve Amalgam Comics one-shots from 1996, the 1997 Amalgam titles and related material.

Why it's worth it. The Amalgam books are the reason this endures — they are made with obvious affection and real craft, inventing plausible publication histories for characters like Dark Claw and Super-Soldier. Given the current state of relations between the two publishers, it is unlikely anything like it happens again.
