Ultimates

The Ultimates debuted in 2002 as the Ultimate Universe version of the Avengers, reimagined by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch for a modern audience. Nick Fury (redesigned as Samuel L. Jackson years before the films) assembled a team including a tougher Captain America, an alcoholic Tony Stark, a tragic Bruce Banner, and a Thor who might be a god or a madman.

The series revolutionized superhero comics with its widescreen cinematic approach, double-page action scenes, and adult tone that treated superheroes as military weapons of a real government. The Ultimates' influence on the Marvel Studios MCU is undeniable: from the casting of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury to the team dynamics in Joss Whedon's The Avengers.

Ultimate Marvel by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus

Ultimate Marvel by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus

Ultimate Marvel by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus collects his original 2010–2012 run on the first Ultimate Universe — not the 2024 relaunch, but the acclaimed earlier work that planted its seeds. Ultimate Comics Ultimates is geopolitical, high-concept superhero storytelling on a world scale: the rise of the hyper-accelerated posthuman "City," the collapse of nations, and the turn of Reed Richards toward the villain he will become — the Maker. With Ultimate Thor and Ultimate Comics Hawkeye alongside, drawn by Carlos Pacheco, Esad Ribić and more. The run that Hickman himself would later build the new Ultimate Universe from.

The Ultimates by Mark Millar Omnibus

The Ultimates by Mark Millar Omnibus

Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch's Ultimates reimagined the Avengers for the post-9/11 world — a government-sponsored super-soldier program with real-world weight, moral ambiguity, and geopolitical consequence. Hitch's widescreen cinematic approach changed how superhero comics were drawn and directly influenced every Marvel film that followed. This is the run that Hollywood adapted into the MCU's Avengers. Collects The Ultimates #1–13 and The Ultimates 2 #1–13, the complete Millar/Hitch run.
