Captain Mar-Vell
Captain Mar-Vell debuted in 1967 as a Kree officer sent to spy on Earth who ended up becoming its defender. Under Jim Starlin's pen in the 1970s, Mar-Vell was transformed into a cosmic hero connected to Cosmic Awareness, starring in stories that redefined the scale of Marvel's space adventures.
His legacy was sealed in 1982 with The Death of Captain Marvel, Marvel Comics' first graphic novel. Jim Starlin chose to kill the hero not in battle but from cancer, creating a story about mortality and dignity that moved the entire comics world. Decades later, his death remains one of the few in Marvel that has never been reversed.
