Michael Lark's noir art defines the visual language of Gotham as a real city rather than a superhero backdrop. An absolute masterpiece.

The Man Who Laughs is Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke's account of Batman's first encounter with the Joker, written as a direct continuation of Frank Miller's Year One. Brubaker writes the Joker as a public health emergency rather than a nemesis, poisoned reservoirs, televised threats, a city that does not yet know what it is dealing with, and Mahnke draws the victims' faces, which is the detail everyone remembers. Made of Wood is the other draw: a genuine detective story with the Golden Age Green Lantern.

The Authority Omnibus Vol. 2 follows the team's dangerous space between rescue and political force, shaped by intervention, power, violence and the uncomfortable line between protection and control. The appeal is seeing this DC period collected as one reading path, with its own tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Superman: Our Worlds at War, collected as a pack of 2 oversized omnibus volumes and cheaper than buying them one by one. Superman: Our Worlds at War Omnibus Vol. 1 throws Superman and the wider DC universe into a conflict big enough to feel like a real planetary crisis. Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke and the Superman line use cosmic scale to test Clark's role as protector when the threat is not just a villain, but war itself. Superman: Our Worlds at War Omnibus Vol. 2 focuses on DC's war-scale Superman event, with Superman shaped by cosmic conflict, grief, heroism under pressure and the cost paid by people around Superman. The appeal is not only continuity; it is watching a specific DC period find its tone, cast and visual rhythm.

Ed Brubaker took over Daredevil directly from Bendis, with Matt Murdock already in prison and his identity already public — a starting position most writers would have reset. Brubaker keeps every problem he inherited and adds more: the prison arc, the move to Europe, and the return of a character Matt had every reason to believe was dead. It is the closest Marvel has come to publishing a straight crime serial, and Lark's art is deliberately unglamorous throughout.
