Background. After eight years — longer than almost any modern writer's stay on a single Marvel title — Ed Brubaker concluded his Captain America run with Steve Rogers restored to the shield and Bucky beginning his solo Winter Soldier journey. The run had fundamentally changed how readers and the industry thought about the character, the Bucky retcon, and what espionage-driven superhero storytelling could achieve.
