Phil Noto

Phil Noto's art looks like nothing else on the shelf. He paints digitally with a soft, cinematic finish, muted palettes, expressive faces, clean staging, that stays calm and grown-up even in an action story. In large omnibus format, that restraint pays off: his pages breathe and his acting carries the story.

He made his name on Black Widow with Nathan Edmondson, a lean spy thriller that became a modern benchmark for the character, as well as on his Thunderbolts work from the Marvel NOW! era. He also became one of the lead artists on Marvel's Star Wars line, Poe Dameron, Chewbacca, Star-Lord, and a highly sought-after cover artist.

Thunderbolts Red Omnibus

Thunderbolts Red Omnibus

Thunderbolts Red is Daniel Way's run on the team, in which General Ross recruits Marvel's most violent characters and runs them as a black-ops unit. The roster is the joke and the point: Red Hulk, Punisher, Deadpool, Elektra and Venom on the same team, all of whom kill and none of whom take orders well. Way writes it as a war comic rather than a superhero book, and the tension comes from Ross being the only one with any interest in restraint.
