The Five Years Later month is the interesting experiment: every DC book skipped ahead simultaneously, showing where each character ended up, and then went back. Some of those futures were later made canon and some were quietly dropped, which makes the volume a snapshot of DC's plans at a specific moment.

Dan Jurgens returned to Superman for DC's Rebirth initiative in 2016, at a moment when there were two Supermen in continuity and neither the reader nor the characters knew why. Jurgens had written the Death of Superman twenty-five years earlier, and Rebirth let him write the reunion: a Superman with a wife and son, restored after five years of a version DC had struggled to sell. The mystery of the second Clark Kent is also the cleanest piece of continuity repair DC has managed.
