Superman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1

Superman appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938 and invented the superhero. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created him as a champion of the oppressed, and the earliest stories are far angrier than the character's later reputation. The 1938 Superman fights slum landlords, corrupt senators and abusive husbands, he is a social crusader who cannot fly and can be hurt by artillery. Reading the origin of the entire genre is worth it on its own, and the gap between this Superman and the modern one is the most interesting thing in the volume.

The fourth Golden Age Superman omnibus covers the war years, when the character was selling bonds on the covers and the stories were carefully avoiding the front. The editorial decision to keep Superman out of the war, the official explanation was that he would end it too quickly, is visible throughout, and it makes the volume a genuine document of how American comics handled a conflict they could not address directly. Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Prankster both debut in this period.

The second Golden Age Superman omnibus covers the early 1940s, when the character was still a social crusader rather than a cosmic one. Siegel and Shuster's Superman punches slumlords and threatens corrupt officials, and he cannot fly or survive artillery. That gap between this character and the modern one is the whole interest, and it is why these stories keep getting rediscovered as unexpectedly political.
