Butch Guice

Jackson "Butch" Guice spent four decades refining a moody, cinematic realism. His later style, heavily photo-referenced, richly inked, built on strong staging and desaturated atmosphere, turned superhero comics into something closer to a spy thriller or war film, selling both a quiet interrogation and a full action set piece with the same grounded weight.

His defining modern run is Captain America with Ed Brubaker, where his art gave the Winter Soldier saga its cold-war chill and made those volumes a cornerstone of Brubaker's celebrated omnibus editions. Earlier he drew a long stretch of Action Comics and the launch of the Flash volume 2, worked on Micronauts and X-Factor, and co-created Resurrection Man.

Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1-2

Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 1-2

Bill Mantlo and Michael Golden created Marvel's Microverse: Commander Arcturus Rann, Marionette, Bug and Acroyear fleeing the tyrant Baron Karza across a universe hidden inside our own. This pack collects the original Marvel run in two oversized omnibus volumes — space opera, rebellion and some of the most inventive art of its era, long out of print and now collected together.

Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 2

Micronauts: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus Vol. 2

This second omnibus opens with the explosive six-part origin of the Microverse, then follows Commander Rann and his rebels as they race to find three keys and stop the mad King Argon, cross into the X-Men's Danger Room pursued by the metamorph Huntarr, and confront the returning Baron Karza. It gathers the deep-cut stretch of Bill Mantlo's cult run that Marvel kept out of print for decades, drawn by Pat Broderick, Gil Kane and Butch Guice.

For collectors, Guice is an artist whose atmosphere reads best in scale and continuity. His shadow-heavy, texture-rich pages benefit enormously from oversized hardcover reproduction, and his long runs are built to be read whole. Following his passing in 2025, his major omnibus appearances also hold a career's worth of craft in a single volume.
