Weapon X: The Return Omnibus

Weapon X: The Return Omnibus

Weapon X: The Return collects Marvel's early-2000s attempt to build a whole line out of the programme that made Wolverine, run this time as a corporate operation recruiting mutants by force. Frank Tieri writes it as workplace horror: mutants conscripted, processed and disposed of by an organisation with an HR department. The Draft one-shots are the interesting part, giving minor characters like Marrow and Wild Child the only sustained attention they have ever had. Almost none of this material is in print elsewhere.

Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 5

Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Vol. 5

The fifth Uncanny omnibus is the year the X-Men lose: Claremont's book heading into Mutant Massacre, with the team fractured and X-Factor operating separately. This stretch introduces Longshot and gives Nightcrawler his only solo miniseries of the era, both of which feed straight back into the main title. It is also where Claremont sets up the Marauders and the Morlock tunnels, so the volume works as the last calm before the crossover that ends the classic era.

X-Men: Mutant Massacre Prelude Omnibus

X-Men: Mutant Massacre Prelude Omnibus

Mutant Massacre is the crossover where the X-Men stop winning. This omnibus covers the run-up: the last stretch of Chris Claremont's book before the Marauders walk into the Morlock tunnels. The value is in what it gathers around Uncanny: the founding of X-Factor, the return of Jean Grey in Fantastic Four #286, and the Longshot and Nightcrawler miniseries that fed straight back into the main title. Read in this order, the Massacre stops being a shock and becomes the consequence of a year of pressure.

The Thing Omnibus

The Thing Omnibus

The Thing Omnibus focuses on Ben Grimm outside the normal Fantastic Four frame, with solo adventures that show the humor, stubbornness and bruised heart behind The Thing. It works especially well for Fantastic Four collectors who want Ben Grimm's solo corner and the Marvel texture around his own supporting cast and conflicts.
