About this edition

Aquaman: The Death of a Prince Deluxe Edition collects the 1970s run in which Black Manta murders Aquaman's infant son and the character never fully recovers. It is the darkest thing DC published about Arthur Curry for decades, drawn largely by Jim Aparo, and it is the origin of the grief that every later writer — Peter David, Geoff Johns, Jeff Parker — has had to work around.

Aquaman by Peter David Omnibus

Aquaman by Peter David Omnibus

Aquaman by Peter David Omnibus collects the run that rebuilt the character from scratch in the 1990s: the beard, the harpoon hand, the temper. Peter David took a hero who had become a punchline and turned him into an angry, funny, genuinely dangerous king, and almost every modern take on Aquaman — including the films — starts from what he did here. Over 1,500 pages in a single oversized hardcover.

Aquaman: The Search for Mera Deluxe Edition

Aquaman: The Search for Mera Deluxe Edition collects the nine-issue Steve Skeates and Jim Aparo run that first treated Aquaman as a serious dramatic character. Mera vanishes, Atlantis falls into the hands of a scheming politician named Narkran, and Arthur abandons his throne to look for his wife while Black Manta circles. It is the moment Aquaman stopped being a Silver Age curiosity.

Spider-Man by Michelinie & Bagley Omnibus Vol. 2

Spider-Man by Michelinie & Bagley Omnibus Vol. 2

David Michelinie and Mark Bagley ran Amazing Spider-Man through the early nineties, the years when Venom became a franchise and Carnage arrived. Maximum Carnage's opening chapters are here, along with Lethal Protector, the miniseries that turned Venom from villain to antihero and sold on that alone. Bagley's Spider-Man is the version a generation grew up with, and this is the run at its commercial peak.

Spider-Man by Michelinie & Larsen Omnibus

David Michelinie and Erik Larsen's Amazing Spider-Man is where Venom stopped being a one-off and became the character who could carry a book by himself. Issue #332 is the run's centre: Venom back with a plan, and Larsen drawing him as something that does not obey anatomy. The volume also contains the Cosmic Spider-Man arc, in which Peter briefly gets unlimited power and the book has to work out what to do with a Spider-Man who cannot lose.

Iron Man by Michelinie, Layton & Romita Jr. Omnibus Vol. 1

Iron Man by Michelinie, Layton & Romita Jr. Omnibus Vol. 1

David Michelinie, Bob Layton and John Romita Jr. wrote and drew the Iron Man run that decided who Tony Stark is: a functioning alcoholic with a company to run. Demon in a Bottle is the story Marvel is still selling forty years later, and it works because Michelinie writes the drinking as boring and shameful rather than dramatic. Justin Hammer's introduction also gives Iron Man his first antagonist who cannot be punched — a rival businessman with better lawyers.

Spider-Man by Michelinie & Bagley Omnibus Vol. 1

The second Michelinie and Bagley omnibus covers the early nineties at full speed: Carnage arrives, Maximum Carnage builds, and Spider-Man's rogues' gallery gets its most violent addition. Issue #361 is Carnage's first full appearance and one of the most collected comics of the decade. Michelinie also writes the Round Robin arc and the Life Theft storyline in which Peter's parents apparently return — a plot that dominated the title for two years and is essential setup for the Clone Saga.

Description

Background. Aquaman spends the 1970s as a king with a family, which is exactly what makes him vulnerable. Black Manta's plan is not to defeat him in battle but to take away the one thing he cannot replace, and the book does not soften the outcome or resolve it cleanly.

What's inside. Collects Adventure Comics #435-437 and #441-455, and Aquaman #57-63, with art by Jim Aparo, Mike Grell, Don Newton and Juan Ortiz, in an oversized deluxe hardcover.

Why it's worth it. It is the story that gave Aquaman genuine tragedy and turned Black Manta from a generic pirate into his defining enemy. For anyone reading the modern runs, this is the source text — and Aparo's artwork here is some of the best of his career.
