Description
Context. Doug Moench defined Moon Knight for a generation. His 1980s solo series transformed the character from a minor Werewolf by Night supporting player into one of Marvel's most complex figures — a mercenary haunted by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, operating through multiple identities across New York's criminal underworld.
What it contains. Volume 1 of the Marc Spector Omnibus collects the opening chapters of Moench's major run on the character, establishing the Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Jake Lockley identities, the supporting cast of Marlene and Frenchie, and the Khonshu mythology that would define Moon Knight for decades.
Why it's worth reading. Moench's Moon Knight is a masterclass in building a complex superhero identity from scratch. The multiple personas aren't a gimmick — they serve the character's fundamental ambiguity about identity, purpose, and redemption. The 1980s artwork, including work by Bill Sienkiewicz in the associated material, gives the series a visual sophistication that set it apart from contemporaries.
