Description
Background. The mid-1970s Fantastic Four navigated the challenge of multiple writer transitions following Thomas's departure — Len Wein, Tony Isabella, and Bill Mantlo each contributed to the book during a period of creative instability that reflected Marvel's broader mid-70s uncertainty. The Thing's evolving relationship with Alicia Masters became the emotional center of the book in lieu of strong antagonist storylines, and Rich Buckler's artwork provided visual consistency across the creative transitions.
What's inside. This omnibus collects the late Thomas and early post-Thomas Fantastic Four material, covering the Medusa period (Medusa serving as Sue Storm's replacement during her extended absence), the Annihilus follow-up storylines, the early Impossible Man return, and various rotating antagonists and creative team experiments. The collection documents the book's transitional period between Thomas's historical stewardship and the Byrne era.
Why it's worth it. For completists, this volume fills the gap between Thomas's primary FF period and Marv Wolfman's run that precedes Byrne — the transitional material shows what aspects of the book's identity proved durable enough to survive Kirby's departure and multiple creative teams. It also contains some underrated individual issues that have been largely unavailable in collected form until the omnibus program.
