Description
Background. Mark Gruenwald wrote Captain America from 1985 to 1995 — a ten-year run that stands as the longest continuous tenure by a single writer on the title. Gruenwald was a Marvel editor and continuity expert who approached Cap with genuine reverence and an encyclopedic knowledge of Marvel lore. His run introduced numerous villains and concepts that remain part of Cap's mythology, and it provided the thematic backbone for the character through the Reagan-Bush era.
What's inside. This first omnibus collects the early Gruenwald issues including the introduction of Flag-Smasher, the Serpent Society (one of the most popular villain groups Gruenwald created), and early Nomad material. The stories engage directly with 1980s American political anxieties — terrorism, nuclear fear, government accountability — through the lens of superhero action.
Why it's worth it. Gruenwald's run is the missing link between the Silver Age Cap and the Brubaker era. For serious collectors, skipping it means having gaps in the mythology. This omnibus makes a decade of foundational material accessible in a format that does justice to the scope of Gruenwald's contribution.
