This is the complete Jeff Parker era, when the Thunderbolts stop being a super-team and become a work-release program. Luke Cage is handed a Raft cellblock of killers — Juggernaut, Crossbones, Ghost and Moonstone, with the swamp-god Man-Thing as their teleporter — and sent out to clean up disasters in exchange for reduced sentences. Description

Background. Jeff Parker's Thunderbolts (2010-2012) reinvents the franchise in the wake of Norman Osborn's fall. Instead of villains posing as heroes, this is a prison-reform program run out of the Raft: Luke Cage is put in charge of a cellblock of the Marvel Universe's most dangerous convicts and ordered to forge them into a functional strike team. The tone is grim, funny and unstable, because every member is one bad day away from turning on the others.

What's inside. Collects Thunderbolts (1997) #144-174 and #163.1, Dark Avengers (2012) #175-190, and material from Enter the Heroic Age #1. The roster rotates through Luke Cage, Juggernaut, Crossbones, Ghost, Moonstone, Songbird, Fixer, Mr. Hyde, Satana and Man-Thing. The back half strands the team across history and formally rebrands the book Dark Avengers, folding Osborn's replacement squad into the same story.

Why it's worth it. One hardcover gathers Parker's entire ~46-issue run in reading order, with Kev Walker's definitive, chunky art plus contributions from Declan Shalvey, Greg Land, Matthew Southworth and Neil Edwards. It replaces three or four out-of-print trades and keeps the Thunderbolts-to-Dark Avengers transition intact.
