Description
Background. In 2012, Marvel commissioned Jason Aaron to take over Thor with an ambitious mission: to restore the title to the top of the line-up after years of more mediocre runs. Aaron arrived with a compelling concept right from the first issue: a new villain named Gorr the God Butcher, capable of killing deities. The story kicked off the most celebrated Aaron-Thor cycle, which would last almost a decade and redefine the character.
What’s included. The first block of Jason Aaron’s run on Thor, including the ‘God Butcher’ saga (featuring Gorr as the villain introduced by Aaron, later the protagonist of Thor: Love and Thunder in the cinema), ‘Godbomb’, and the arrival of Jane Foster as the new Thor following ‘Original Sin’. Lead art by Esad Ribić, one of the most celebrated illustrators in modern comics, with digital watercolour pages that redefined the character’s aesthetic.
Why it’s worth reading. The God Butcher is a highly regarded opener for Aaron’s Thor run. Aaron presents a villain with genuine reasons to hate the gods (his entire people starved to death whilst the deities looked on) and turns the conflict into a reflection on faith, power and responsibility. Esad Ribić draws Thor in a pictorial style unique to mainstream comics. A modern must-read.
