Description

Background. Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 in 1962, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. What began as just another masked hero comic (with Donald Blake transforming into Thor by striking his staff) quickly became something unique: Kirby introduced Asgard as an entire universe, complete with gods, giants and realms connected by a cosmic tree. For years, it was one of the most visually ambitious comics Marvel published.

What it contains. Thor’s first historical arc, featuring foundational material from the Lee-Kirby era: the character’s introduction, the first clashes with Loki, the establishment of Asgard as a setting, and the first cosmic sagas that would take the god of thunder beyond Earth. Complete art by Jack Kirby from his golden age.

Why it’s worth it. Jack Kirby’s Thor is one of the artistic pinnacles of American comics. His pages of Asgard, his designs of the Norse gods and his cosmic scenes are the template that every Thor artist has imitated ever since.
